Melania Trump fires back at librarian who rejected gift of Dr. Seuss books as ‘racist’
Fox News ^ | September 28, 2017 | Brook Singman

First lady Melania Trump fired back Friday at a Massachusetts elementary school librarian who rejected her donation of Dr. Seuss books, claiming their illustrations are examples of “racist propaganda.”

Stephanie Grisham, director of communications for the first lady's office, said in a statement to Fox News that the response was "unfortunate," and Mrs. Trump wanted to use her platform "to help as many children as she can."

"She has demonstrated this in both actions and words since her husband took office, and sending books to children across the country is but one example," she said. "To turn the gesture of sending young students some books into something divisive is unfortunate, but the First Lady remains committed to her efforts on behalf of children everywhere."

To celebrate “National Read a Book Day,” the first lady had sent out a collection of 10 Dr. Seuss books to one school in each state across the nation. The titles included: "The Cat in the Hat"; "One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish"; "Wacky Wednesday"; "Green Eggs and Ham"; and "Oh, the Places You’ll Go!"

I met someone a couple weeks ago who’s son has a PhD in Physics and works at a nursing home.

He enjoys that and starts med school in the fall.

Wow, the bills must be insane.

Of our four kids, two have associates degrees and are working. One of them is continuing at an online school. She wants to be a proofreader/editor and is actively pursuing any sort of work possible at several publishers where she lives.

The other is at B&N

Number three is going to graduate as an aerospace engineer in the spring. He’s managed to keep his debt load pretty manageable. I think it’s under $45,000 so far. He has a college job in his field that offers education reimbursement.

Number four just graduated high school and is planning a career in the skilled trades. He’s pretty much full time at Chick Fil A right now. He wants to volunteer all next summer at a Christian camp so he’s not starting any apprenticeship until after that.

I think I’ve only read the Cat in the Hat books. He was a bit subversive - sort of like Froggie the Gremlin on the old Andy Devine Show! Hipster animals, lol.

Headline is hype. “Firing back” makes it sound like she personally delivered some blunt insult...like somebody else does, but not remembering who.

Agree with you there. The Cat in the Hat had a deep naughty streak. Somewhat subversive is a good description.

Don’t forget “ham”, it’s anti Muslim, and Dr. Seus was not only NOT a doctor but he was a white supremacist.

Checking Dr. Seuss’s bio, I see that he was liberal/left-wing. The kind that is marginalized today.

This stupid librarian doesn’t know the difference between a “cliche” book and a classic. That, from a librarian! The dumbing down continues.

Many of the Master of Library Science degrees that are accredited by the American Library Association are offered on-line. Simmon’s college has a good one. The librarians that I have helped hire are moderately liberal. I don’t know how much left wing indoctrination occurs; much of the curriculum now deals with managing resources and learning about software for libraries, both public and academic.

Congratulation to your daughter for the 200th book sold.

Well after reviewing about 200 applications over the past few years, I know what people who major in history, English,
sociology, women studies do-they get a Master’s degree in library science and try to find work as a librarian.

Some months ago, a small town in Maine (on the water) needed a librarian-part time 20 hours a week. They had 50 applications from around the country.

Someone should point out that Dr Seuss books are already in the school’s catalog and by failing to remove them the librarian is failing to root out racism, according to her own standards.

Oh wait, I just did.

The article I looked at also called Seuss a liberal Democrat. But it mentioned he was anti-fascist and racist as well. Oh, those liberal Democrats.

‘In the ads (from the collection of the library of the University of California, San Diego), black people are presented as savages, living in the tropics, dressed in grass skirts. Arabs are portrayed as camel-riding nomads or sultans.

In his political cartoons (from the collection of the Springfield Library and Museums Association), Seuss inveighed against the Japanese during World War II; he drew them buck-toothed and squint-eyed.

The images are depressing because they reveal that one of America’s most original artist-authors had the same tired views of non-whites that his contemporaries did. During the war,Seuss defended his anti-Japanese view, according to his biographer Richard H. Minear:

“... right now, when the Japs are planting their hatchets in our skulls, it seems like a hell of a time for us to smile and warble: “Brothers!” It is a rather flabby battle cry. If we want to win, we’ve got to kill Japs, whether it depresses John Haynes Holmes or not. We can get palsy-walsy afterward with those that are left.”’

Interesting! So he was down on the Japs during WWII - what a unique position, lol!

Don’t you get tired of wet-behind-the-ears children talking about a past they didn’t experience and yet have all the answers? My dad fought against them for 4 years. He ended up with malaria which plagued him for years. And he rarely, if ever, spoke of his terrible experiences.

Librarians are evil.

Some of them truly are. I saw that first hand during my service as a member of the local library board and, eventually, its president. They are often flamingly liberal, manipulative of their patrons, whining, grasping, and self serving. The range of behaviors I witnessed went from keeping conservative books out of the library to monopolizing "best sellers" for themselves. The waiting list for the most popular books was often 2 years long. I ripped up my library card after I left the board, I was so disgusted.
