Big Studios Cutting Losses This Weekend, Pulling Flops From Theaters Earlier Than Usual
Showbiz ^ | October 21,2017 | Roger Friedman

It’s a bizarre season in Hollywood. Almost nothing is “working,” and the studios can’t afford to waste any more money hoping things will turn around. They’re pulling flops from theaters earlier than usual.

This weekend, for example, Warner Bros. is putting out a white flag on “Blade Runner” after three tough weeks. They’ve cut the number of theaters showing Denis Villeneuve’s beautiful film by 855. So far, “Blade Runner” has made just $66 million. Audiences have not clamored to it. And now, week by week, Warners will quietly take it away.

Warner’s isn’t alone. Universal is pulling Tom Cruise’s “American Made” from 539 locations after a month in release. The Doug Liman directed thriller has made just $43 million. Good reviews haven’t helped push Cruise fans to theaters. One problem was lack of promotion since Cruise wasn’t available. Also, audiences may have just soured on him after “The Mummy” and other flops. With both studios, it wasn’t for lack of trying.

The biggest decease (de-crease, but pun intended here) is for the revived “Flatliners.” With just $16 million in the till, Sony would be better off paying people to see this turkey. They’re retreating from 1,433 theaters this weekend, leaving “Flatliners” to breathe on its own. It will be completely dead by Sunday.

Also just about dead is the much praised “Battle of the Sexes,” Fox Searchlight couldn’t get anyone to go see it despite great reviews and excellent marketing. I’m actually dumbfounded that it’s made just $11 million. FS is killing off 849 screens. Ouch! And “Battle” was supposed to yield some awards action.

Warner’s, meantime, is facing more trouble than the other studios. Their “Geostorm” is going to be a disaster this weekend. And their “Lego Ninja” movie is leaving 951 theaters after $52 million and five weeks.

Love Longmire. Final season premiere is this November. I need to binge watch Season 3 and 4. The issue with movies for me is that there is nothing new. Remake upon remake.

Most people will wait for Netflix. Movie night at home is way more appealing.

Wonder what all those millennials and their awesome disposable income are spending their money on?

Sports, movies and other public entertainment venues are losing steam. So where is the money going?

Good summary, there it is.

A year ago young daughter took me for my burfday to see `Spirited AWay’s (Japanese family anime) 15th anniversary. Popcorn, soda—over $20. I told the kid behind the counter they couldn’t be serious. But they were.
We went to Culvers for meals after the movie instead for that much money. A `no guns’ sign on the door too. Haven’t been back to the movies since, screw `em.

“So where is the money going?” Good question.
Young people enjoy taking Instagram photos at two place: cool cities and nice restaurants.
Young people reject big homes, big collections of dolls, books and antiques), movies, sports stadiums and church.
Sadly, Young people feel forced to go into debt for an empty college degree.
Churches, movie producers and real estate agents need to learn abou young people from two sets of people: travel agents and waiters.

Saw “The Mountain Between Us” last weekend in a theater. It was the best new movie I’ve seen in a long time. A good story. Simple plot but very well done. If Hollywood could get past the politics and start making good movies again for everyone, instead of shoving thier cultural rot down our throats, they could revive the industry. But they are as obtuse as the NFL, so they’re sabotaging thier own business.

I hope that Hollyweird and the NFL will both crash and burn. To hell with Leftard virtue-signallers harassing and lecturing us as their inferiors. To hell with all of them.

The baby boomers completely destroyed Hollywood. Stripped it of all it’s elegance and intelligence. The last 20 years of American cinema have been by far the worst in it’s history.

n the 80’s and 90’s, there were still some good films, but also plenty of crap with one dimensional characters, amateurish dialogue, and trite plot progressions (Ron Howard is the king of this genre.....made for TV level quality, but with a big budget and big stars).

Take the worst tendencies of those bad movies from the 80’s and 90’s, and add an extra helping of 7th grader vulgarity, faux nihilistic hipness, and heavy handed PC virtue signalling, and it’s no wonder no one wants to spend money on what modern day Hollywood has been churning out.

Only a fool would waste money on that. The movie industry will find its legs. But theaters are dying.

Yep. Now that anyone with $500 can have a 55" big screen in their living room and the ability to stream, buy disks, or download pretty much anything; why spend the $20 per person after drinks, popcorn, and tickets. Add surround sound real cheap too to the homestead and have it for music streaming too.

People still want good movie and TV entertainment; they just aren't finding a way to justify the extra expense when they can have nearly the same experience without all the rude people and high cost right at home. Pretty soon a 75" cardboard thin OLED TV will just hang on your wall with some magnets. Two wires will connect it to a box and it will connect to a sound bar.

Just saw Blade Runner tonight. I thought the one version I saw of the original was better.

FWIW, the last four movies I’ve seen in the theater were the first two parts of Atlas Shrugged, Ghost in the Shell and Blade Runner 2049.

BR-2049, along with it’s predecessor are movies that will be bought and viewed 100 years from now. I’d jump for a chance to own both in 4K-HDR and I’m sure they’ll eventually be converted to Holotank format right around 2052 when the next sequel Blade Runner 2079 is released.

I highly recommend you catch up by watching the original before you watch the squeal and if you don’t want to sit through that long a movie watch it in chunks. Once you’ve seen it you will probably watch it again as it is positively
overflowing with layers of symbolism that no one viewing will completely reveal. Cells interlinked within cells interlinked.

Re: “I fell in love with Sean Young, after seeing the original Blade Runner!"

I looked up her bio on Wiki a few days ago.

Since the late 1980s, she had some bad luck with film choices, then a film injury, then she developed an alcohol problem, then she developed a reputation as someone who was very difficult to work with.

She still works constantly, but her star power disappeared 25 years ago.

Bladerunner—looking to forward to picking up the DVD in the remainder bin in Walmart in a couple of years—the remainder bin has just dropped the price on old movies from $5 to $3.79. :-)

We saw Bladerunner and it seemed to have potential but never got there. Stayed a bit dark and slow (especially after all the hype) and seemed to end with some sort of message in mind but insufficient data to figure out what the message was supposed to be. Big disappointment as it didn’t give either a lot of action or manage to manipulate the heart strings - of course, that’s just us.....
