McCain hits Trump where it hurts, attacking ‘bone spur’ deferments in Vietnam

*snip*

McCain, whose status as a war hero Trump publicly and controversially doubted as a 2016 presidential candidate, appeared to retaliate in kind against the president in a C-SPAN interview about the Vietnam War airing Sunday night. In the interview, McCain pointed to wealthy Americans who were able to get out of being drafted into service in the conflict in which he spent years as a prisoner of war. And he pointed to a very specific type of deferment which Trump just happened to use.

“One aspect of the conflict, by the way, that I will never ever countenance is that we drafted the lowest-income level of America, and the highest-income level found a doctor that would say that they had a bone spur,” McCain said. “That is wrong. That is wrong. If we are going to ask every American to serve, every American should serve.”

At least Trump didn’t rat out his shipmates and his country.

I am one of the many on FR who still remains skeptical of Trump.

He’s doing what we elected him to do. If you’re skeptical, it means you don’t him to do some of those things. The alternative was a nightmare. Come on in, the water’s fine.

Such children that the Wash Post. This is such school yard BS.

I fell for the headline tease and then just shook my head in disbelief.

How many US Navy warplanes did John McCain destroy? Was it three? And that most other men would have been banned from further flying except that McCaines father and grandfather who served with distinction in the US Navy.

I don’t recall a single person that didn’t try to stay out of the Army back then. After the first guys came home the story was stay out of Vietnam Nam if you possibly could.
Not going in the army back then has never been looked down upon that I know of. After all, the news media (Walter Cronkite)made sure it was an unwinable war. We sacrificed fifty thousand so the Dems could turn tale and run from a war they started.

McPain can kiss my ass.

My brother (who would have been Trump’s age now) had a draft deferment because of bone spurs. We were certainly not rich. It was the recruiting office that would not accept him.

He had ample opportunity to be. He deliberately threw the election to Zero.

You're assigning a degree of competence to McCain he doesn't actually possess. The only thing he's qualified for is holding down a government sinecure and posturing. When he's led any kind of successful legislative push, it's inevitably a cave to liberal interests. He's just an incompetent.

Dubya was incompetent, but less incompetent than McCain. Think about how Dubya almost lost to a couple of stiffs (Gore and Kerry). How could anyone think that a loser like McCain could defeat one of the greatest political talents since FDR - someone who secured the some of biggest popular vote margins ever in % terms, made huge strides in the liberal agenda despite GOP legislative majorities in 6 of his 8 years and emerged at the end of his tenure with a net positive poll rating? It's pretty amazing that the 2008 GOP primaries came down to two stiffs, Romney and McCain, both political zombies. When it got to that point, the writing was on the wall - even Hillary would probably have beaten either of them.

You have a most interesting home page. Long, but artistic and somewhat provocative. May I ask what or who do you like better-snakes or Alice Cooper?

Trump never got the nickname "Songbird" from his fellow POWs and had his confession played on continuous loop for their benefit.

Also, Trump never colluded to cover up credible reports of POWs left behind.

Some people..down deep don’t want to win.

Multiple crashed planes...getting involved in Keating Five....continually kissing up to the purported enemy...throwing the election....and now trying to work against his party’s POTUS. He seems to choose loser behavior.

IIRC, his grandfather was an Admiral and his father was CINC for the Navy for the Pacific theatre.

So good to know nepotism played no part in our armed forces.

Well they did torture the shit out of him for five years and he did resist an early release

Just never been a likable fellow

Little man complex in spades but has Sand

He’s gonna get worse

Megagliomas rob the soul till death

Watched it with me own eyes up close 20 years as he who spawned me died from it

This makes McCain look small Trump is best to resist replying

Let his unaffiliated underlings handle it

Man do we ever now not realize the GOP fears Trump even more than the media and Dems

This is real war y’all

I think you gravely underestimate these individuals. McQueeg, Willard, Shrub, Zero, Hillary... they’re all a part of the same corrupt Deep State Combine. The fact that many of us didn’t wake up to that fact a long time ago is astonishing. The writing on the wall was about as glaring as could be. Why do you think they all react the same way and use the same talking points against President Trump ?

He’s done far more damage from within the GOP. Same with Willard.

Can you imagine going through life constantly pissed off because you know that you wouldn’t make a good pimple on your father’s or granfather’s ass. That’s McCain in a nutshell. “The other former POWs won’t even sit with him at a POW reunion.” - Ross Perot

On balance, the US would have been better off if McCain hadn’t traded on his family name to get into the service.

McQueeg never hesitates to attack Conservatives with a singular viciousness (ditto Willard), but never against the left. Zero was infinitely beatable in 2008 with a candidate actually willing to win.
