Full Title: Saudi Arabia's arrest of Alwaleed Bin Talal, high-ranking purge seen linked to 'frustration' and 'consolidation of power'
Analysts said the goal of the purge went beyond corruption and aimed to remove potential opposition to Prince Mohammed as he pushes an ambitious and controversial reform agenda.
In September he announced that a ban on women driving would be lifted and he is trying to break decades of conservative tradition by promoting public entertainment and visits by foreign tourists.
In economic policy, he has slashed state spending in some areas and plans a big sale of state assets.
"The most recent crackdown breaks with the tradition of consensus within the ruling family whose secretive inner workings are equivalent to those of the Kremlin at the time of the Soviet Union," wrote James Dorsey, a senior fellow at Singapore's S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies.
"Prince Mohammed, rather than forging alliances, is extending his iron grip to the ruling family, the military, and the National Guard to counter what appears to be more widespread opposition within the family as well as the military to his reforms and the Yemen war," Dorsey said.
An economist at a big Gulf bank, who declined to be named because of political sensitivities, said nobody in Saudi Arabia believed corruption was at the root of the purge.

Saudi Arabia has arrested dozens of senior figures including princes, ministers and a top business tycoon, in what authorities hailed Sunday as a “decisive” anti-corruption sweep as the kingdom’s crown prince consolidates power.
Prominent billionaire Al-Waleed bin Talal was among the 11 princes arrested late Saturday, reports said, immediately after a new anti-corruption commission headed by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman was established by royal decree.

Yep - and I believe that having Trump as out President may have had some affect on the decision to do this - Saudi isn’t our friend but some understand that they really don’t want to have Trump as a dedicated enemy. He may have provided a bit of lubricant for the skids to move them closer to the modern world.

Indeed. 'Corruption' is the cover story, as in China. This is a power play between the wahhabi/House of Saud faction that has ruled 'til now and Salman the reformer who wants to break the power sharing agreement with the wahhabists. He can't come out and say that and live to the end of the week so it's "Corruption. Yeah, that's the ticket."
The US is oil independent and the economic leverage that they have had should, over time, diminish.
I agree - some Saudis have been looking to the future and understand that “Westernization” is the only intelligent move. Weak-kneed “Presidents” like Clinton and Obama, who believe in whatever they can profit from, or who “Will stand with Islam when the winds of war blow” (or sumpin’ like that), were not conducive. Trump is going to go down in history as “The Great Enabler” of true progress.
