Democrat Northam wins Virginia governor's race
ABC News ^ | November 7, 2017 | Associated Press

Democrat Ralph Northam has won Virginia's race for governor.

Early unofficial results show Northam defeated Republican Ed Gillespie on Tuesday.

Virginia's hard-fought race was closely watched as a swing-state test of President Donald Trump's popularity. Northam, a pediatric neurologist and the state's lieutenant governor, repeatedly tried to tie Gillespie to the president during months of divisive campaigning overshadowed by racial overtones and attack ads.

Northam's victory was in large part due to a surge in anti-Trump energy since the president took office. Democrats said they had record levels of enthusiasm heading into the race.

Gillespie kept Trump at a distance throughout the campaign but tried to rally the president's supporters with hard-edge ads focused on illegal immigration and preserving Confederate statues.

Its only a referendum on Trump when a republican loses. Never when they win.

Nope, he was losing most of the night. They called it at 8:30. We lost all over 14 seats in the House and will probably loss control of it. Game Over.

To be expected - said so the other day. Trump lost the state, this was an establishment candidate, the momentum was with the Dems, and this was a state that hadn’t vote Rep in 8 years. The polls were generally consistent on a Northam win.

How much of the vote did the libertarian siphon off?

I’ll bet the pickup truck ad turned out 120-130% of the vote for various minority groups.

"Not going to happen anywhere within a 125 mile radius of Washington DC."

I stayed in DC for the last couple of nights and was struck by the overwhelming number of ads. A continuous theme seemed to be how poorly the Virginia economy was performing.

I thought the DC suburbs were among the very few areas of the country that were doing well during the Obama years. I took complaints about the Virginia economy now as a sign that the swamp is draining.

(I also heard from people that the traffic into DC remains horrendous so the swamp still has a lot to drain.)

Was thinking of presidential elections that always went at the last hour to a flood of NE votes there that magically showed up, always just enough to tip the election.

Also with the Obama era cuts to the military there are fewer conservatives in VA.

Correct. I voted in Virginia this morning and while I did vote for Vogel and Adams, I did not vote for the establishment Bush-supported Gillespie, who is the kind of republican who's been screwing us for years.

Of course, you will be blamed for the ills associated with democrat rule in VA.

At some point Karl Rove is going to get the pink slip.

We have to run Trump Republicans to win elections, the Bush GOP is dead.

No, it isn’t funny anymore at all.

It’s scary how unhinged they are.

They are almost demonic with rage over losing the election.

They have no idea how foolish and stupid they look and if they do they don’t have sense enough to care.

They are pathetic and dangerous at the same time.

6 year term

Nope, VA's Governors only serve a single 4 year term. That's it. It's the stupidest term-limit law in the country. You can't get nothing done in 4 years.

Abject propaganda from ABC news. Hillary and her DC-suckling Swamp-scum won Virginia last year, and Gillespie was too stupid to capitalize on President Trump's popularity with GOP voters. If Gillespie had embraced President Trump's #MAGA and #DrainTheSwamp policies, he might have had a chance.

Instead, Gillespie distanced himself from the President and his energized populist base. Consequently, the GOP—and a sufficient number of independent voters—distanced themselves from GOPe Gillespie, and there was no appreciable enthusiasm for him.

Yet another pronounced and stinging rebuke of the GOPe Swamp. Old habits die hard...

NoVa is booming—so far the Republican Congress has not taken any action to reverse the trend of growth in .gov contracting.

The military/industrial/intelligence/pharma/education etal complex is a Leviathan totally out of control. The number of lobbyists pretending to be law firms continue onward and upward.

NoVa is neck deep in the DC swamp.
