Trump Pentagon nominee on Texas shooting: It's 'insane' that civilians can buy 'assault' rifles
Washington Examiner ^ | Nov 7, 2017 | Travis J. Tritten

President Trump’s pick to head up the military health system lunged into the U.S. gun debate Tuesday during a Senate hearing, saying laws allowing civilians to purchase long guns like the Texas church shooter are “insane.”

Dean Winslow, a professor at Stanford University, offered up the assessment, seemingly unprompted, amid questions from Sen. Jeanne Shaheen, D-N.H., about the military’s treatment of domestic violence convictions during his nomination hearing to be assistant secretary of defense for health affairs.

Shaheen asked specifically whether Winslow believed a person such as Devin Patrick Kelley, who was jailed by the military for assaulting his wife and stepson, should have received a dishonorable discharge instead of the lesser bad conduct discharge.

Winslow at first pointed to what he called a single point of failure, apparently referring to the Air Force’s mistake of not reporting Kelley’s crime to civilian authorities, which allowed him to purchase guns. But then he went further.

“I’d also like to, and I may get in trouble with other members of the committee, just say how insane it is that in the United States of America a civilian can go out and buy a semi-automatic assault rifle like an AR-15, which apparently was the weapon that was used,” Winslow said. Kelley reportedly used a Ruger AR-556, which is similar in style to an AR-15.

Also during the hearing, Winslow was pressed by Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., the Armed Services chairman, to explain a reference in Winslow’s written answers to the committee about providing abortions to military women.

“I also believe that therapeutic abortion services should be provided by the military in appropriately staffed facilities,” Winslow wrote in the submitted questionnaire.

McCain read the quote and ask pointedly, “What do you mean by that?”

Winslow said he was glad for the opportunity to clarify his response and that he understands the military has long been barred by law from providing abortions in most cases.

Therapeutic abortions refer to situations in which the mother’s life is in danger, Winslow said.

“You better clean it up doctor or you are going to have trouble getting it through the Senate,” McCain warned.

Doesn't work that way. They ask you questions about your background and criminal history, but they also use a national database to check who you are.

The problem with this guy is that the Air Force neglected to actually file the paperwork/keystrokes that his guy was able to even buy a firearm of any kind. With his history he wouldn't have been able to buy a pop gun if the Air Force (The Government) had done its’ job!

The following questions are on the Form 4473 Firearms Transaction Form

#11 f: Have you ever been adjudicated as mental defective OR been committed to a mental institution?

This jack-hole had escaped a military mental facility in the past!

#11 g: Have you been discharged from the armed services under dishonorable conditions?

HE was dishonorably discharged after a conviction for domestic violence!

#11 i Have you been convicted in ANY court for a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence?

He had beet up his ex-wife and cracked his infant child's’ skull that he did time for in military prison.

Had the Air Force not been negligent and as incompetent as every other government bureaucracy and actually reported the conviction, discharge and time served in a mental institution to the data base, he would not have had a gun at all.

Civilians in America, from before 1776 till 1956, have always been better armed than the US Army.

Now suddenly it is a problem?

There are equally nutty professors, or if you prefer morons in every state of the union, California by no means has a lock on stupidity. Just look to New York and Virginia, or for that matter any University city in Texas.

Maroon.

The term assault rifle/assault weapon has been bastardized by the left just as so many other words or phrases have been.

They are “experts” at this!

Is there “The Bureau of Word Manipulation”? or better put, The Bureau of People Manipulation (through the use of the Language)”

There must be!

“When I think of an Air Force general, the first image that pops up in my mind is Curtis LeMay.”

And nobody asked him not to smoke...not even JFK who smoked cigars himself. Didnt even cross people’s minds. But that was when America was still America. Yes, he was a general’s general...up there with Patton, IKE, Halsey, Nimitz, etc.

“For you a heartfelt thank you for your service.”

Serving under such incredible WW2 leaders was an honor for which I was woefully unworthy of but eternally grateful for.
Than you.

We don’t need people at the highest levels of government who don’t understand the purpose of the 2nd Amendment. Fire him!

The Pentagon has no authority over civilians.

He can’t begin to do anything with the 2nd Amendment.

Trump isolates such people so their “other tendencies” can’t be realized.

With the Swamp all around, he picks carefully, hoping the Swamp votes people his people in, while assuring their strangeness can’t affect his policies.

It’s a win-win under difficult circumstances. It’s like hiring the best plumber, who also happens to be a big NFL fan. You aren’t hiring the guy because he’s “pro-protest.” You’re hiring the guy to do excellent plumbing.

Don’t insult our intelligence.

A worm on the inside soon spoils all.

He is NOT the “best”!

He is an ideolog with an agenda which will rapidly expand to civilian law.

You go to war with the army you have, not the army you want.

You learn hiw to minimize infouences while moving forward.

Trump does this.

This is a mistake Trump made - allowing too many establishment people in.

AND allowing WAY too many establishment people to stay around.

Therapeutic abortions refer to situations in which the mother’s life is in danger, Winslow said.”

That’s not adding up. If they are only barred “in most cases”, then obviously the exception is already when the mother’s life is in danger. So he must be campaigning for something else when he says “therapeutic abortions”. I’d guess he really means “abortions as birth control”.
