Live Alabama Election Results: Roy Moore and Doug Jones Compete for Senate Seat

Alabama votes on Tuesday in a special election to fill the Senate seat vacated by Jeff Sessions, now the attorney general. The last polls close at 8 p.m. Eastern. Strong support for Roy S. Moore, the Republican, is expected in rural, mostly white parts of the state and in its northern half. The Democrat, Doug Jones, aims to create a lead in the urban counties that include Birmingham and Montgomery, and across a band of largely black counties.

One critical battleground is a trio of smaller, whiter cities: Mobile, Tuscaloosa and Huntsville. Mr. Moore won a hard race in 2012 by keeping things close there. Mr. Jones hopes to win the cities by a convincing margin.

They’ll have one heck of a hard time doing so if they try.....

There is a clear ‘constitutional distinction’ between ‘expulsion’ and ‘exclusion’.

‘Exclusion’ would occur if the Senate refused to allow Moore to take his seat,...... whereas ‘expulsion’ would be by process of the Senate after Moore took his oath of office.

The Supreme Court in Powell case held that the Qualifications of Members Clause of Article I pertaining to the House of Representatives is an exclusive list of qualifications, and that Congress does not have the constitutional authority to develop its own qualifications additionally to those specified. ...........In other words, Congress in each House may only ‘exclude’ a duly elected member for reasons actually enumerated in that clause.

Article 1, Section 3.3 provides the qualifications of senators and says in its entirety:

No Person shall be a Senator who shall not have attained to the Age of thirty Years, and been nine Years a Citizen of the United States, and who shall not, when elected, be an Inhabitant of that State for which he shall be chosen.

Where is the NY slimes getting their numbers from? When I go to Alabama site they are no where near that number..

>><<

I don’t know where they get the numbers. The NYSlimes did a great job with the Trump-Evil Witch numbers last Nov., though.

The movement of the gauge is interesting to watch.

I would urge you to realize that although reports are in from some of those precincts, they’re still quite low in total percentage reporting.

Now I haven’t been to them recently, but it’s something you’ll want to keep an eye on. You may have, and know more than me at this point, but I thought I’d mention it.

It is true the rural areas are still not shown reporting in. Those should be good for us, but then they don’t have the numbers.

We’ll see. I enjoy watching the numbers come in.

Thanks.

Nate Silver after crowing about Limestone County being closer: “With 88 percent of the votes now reported in Limestone County, Moore’s lead has expanded to 24 points — slightly better than the benchmarks he needs in a 50/50 race.”

Oops? Eh, Nate?

Billy Idol had all the energy to blow the roof off of arena-sized venues, so I can imagine how crazy it must have been to see him in a smaller venue.

Yes, he appeared at my college - Central Connecticut State University - and gave an incredible concert in a small-ish concert hall there (Welte Hall). We had seats in the front row! He was amazing.

It was kind of like this photo, except back the 1980s:

One more song reference for tonight, courtesy of Kidd Rock: “We are singing ‘Sweet Home Alabama’ all autumn long!”

Alright! :-)

Judge Moore has already exceeded McConnell’s 1984 victory over Democrat Walter Huddleston. Hopefully, he will gain a decisive lead.
