Minnesota Lieutenant Governor Tina Smith to replace Franken

Dec 13 (Reuters) - Minnesota's Democratic Lieutenant Governor Tina Smith was appointed as U.S. senator on Wednesday to replace Al Franken, who resigned after being accused of sexual harassment, the state's governor said at a news conference.

Governor Mark Dayton said that Smith will serve a one-year term in the Senate, concluding in January 2019. Smith, 59, will run in a special election for the seat next year.

Smith became lieutenant governor in January 2015. The Star Tribune said she previously worked as Dayton's chief of staff and held positions at General Mills and Planned Parenthood.

Last week Franken, 66, also a Democrat, announced his resignation from the seat he has held since 2009. The former comedian has denied some of the allegations against him and questioned others. Reuters has not independently verified the accusations against Franken.

Minnesota will soon have two women senators, as Smith will join fellow Democrat Amy Klobuchar, 57, who became the state's first woman senator after winning election a year ago.

The Republican Party's slim majority in the Senate will not be affected by the move to replace Franken.

Democrats will gain a seat to cut Republican's majority in the 100-member Senate to 51 after Tuesday night's victory by Doug Jones over Republican candidate Roy Moore in a special election in Alabama.

Has Stuart Smalley commented on this development yet? Unless I missed a recent, definite resignation, it sounds like the Minnesota governor might be trying to speed the non-specific resignation process along.

A woman. What a surprise. Generally immune from allegations of sexual misconduct.

If the male senator who is resigning is doing so due to allegations of sexual misconduct then it makes sense to appoint a woman to replace him.

She was VP of the Minnesota PP.

That's more than Just "held a position". She was the Head Baby Killer.

I thought for sure they would put Kobul Keith Ellison in the seat.

It would have been fun to be there the first time Senator Moore had met Senator Ellison or Senator Baldwin. But that's not going to happen now.

The fact that the governor waited until this morning to announce his successor.

Had the harassment charges against Moore failed to keep him out of the Senate, then the whole thing would have quietly gone away.

Now that they derailed Moore they're gearing up to drive Trump from office over fake harassment, coming in January.

Typical liberal resume, no accomplishments and gets the job because of connections.

Could very well be but females (voters out in the country) in general never trust nor especially even like other females.

We know just what “bad girl” other women can be, so let the Dems field an all female Amazon team of gals and watch many lose.

It’s the cowardly RINOs out there I trust the least not to bend over and cover their jock straps from fear of the “female backlash,”

They forget why John Wayne was not only popular with men but women too.

We never, ever want metrosexuals but they never learn.

It’s like homosexual designers telling women how to dress - ugly because gay guys are jealous of women yet desire to look like the gorgeous ones!

Unless someone made him sign the paper after his little dog and pony speech show- Al Franken did not resign yet.
He said he was going to resign in the coming weeks...

So how can another senator be appointed?

Not saying your wrong but I’ll believe it when I see it. Either way it will not stop them from going after Trump over the harassment charges.
