I know the rational basis test for a law is low, but this seems to violate it.

Like I can tell by looking at it?

What about all the people who feel safer in a store with bullet proof glass.

Why to destroy a city. The shop owners will just close up shop and move out. Then it’ll be Detro8it all over again.

Oh but it’s bigotry to create “food deserts” (areas without stores) based on unrestricted crime.

“democrat-run cities”
Why, these brave Koreans do yeoman duty keeping the dindus corralled in Brotherly Love Negro Containment Center.
This isn’t good news at all.

Oh well. They say the best way to get rid of a bad law is to enforce it rigorously. But it won’t be any skin off her nose.

Same mentality as opposing the Strategic Defense Initiative. We’re better off unprotected from bullets and nuclear attack. These motives are unambiguous and cannot be misconstrued.

Maybe that is exactly what they want. Then the racists can corner the market. Yeah, that’s the ticket. Legislate the competition out of business. I would be willing to bet the racists would not be required to follow the council’s edict. 👎☝️

There goes all the mom and pop liquor stores in the ghetto.

This doesn't apply to actual licensed liquor stores, or corner stores. The law is narrowly aimed at "delis" that operate as restaurants, but aren't really restaurants and, in fact, don't really sell anything other than crack pipes and 40 oz bottles of high-alcohol malt liquor to unemployed black men.

By law, restaurants are supposed to allow access to restrooms for patrons. The plexiglass prevents this.

>If I were store owners, I’d pack up and leave.<

That's the point. These businesses are viewed by many to be a nuisance.

Still astonishes me a majority of American voters are registered as Democrats

They are calling some areas of North Tulsa food deserts...because there are too many Dollar General..and Family Dollar stores.

A Black councilman to his credit...said that was bunk.

There's plenty of good eating food...in my local Dollar General. Good canned goods...and very reasonably priced...

My pantry's are stocked with beans, tuna fish, sardines, soup, etc..etc....

The food deserts are the PopEye's, KFC's, McDonalds...etc...

All just my opinion...........

Got a link.

Sure. Here's one of several articles about this.

Bill would force Philly's 'stop-and-go' stores to remove bulletproof glass

These stores get large establishment licenses which are reserved for restaurants that seat 30 or more and they skirt the law by having a "hot" food on a menu like hot dogs or frozen pizzas, which they don't really sell. What they do sell are 40s, shots, loose cigarettes, and drug paraphernalia (did you ever wonder why all the convenience stores in the 'hood sell fake plastic roses in little glass tubes? Those are crack pipes). And they attract a lot of riffraff and intoxicated loiterers.

The city council doesn't want merchants shot and killed. They want these "delis" to close up and go away (or at least operate as actual restaurants and not unlicensed liquor stores). It's the 'hood cleaning up itself.

From the pictures in the article, it looks like they sell a lot more than crack pipes and malt liquor. But yeah, it does look like stuff you might want rather than need.
Not just for safety, the store owners probably decided to put their goods behind plexiglass because they got tired of losing money to pilfering and maybe even `flash mobs’.

IAE the ordinance will probably be struck down on one of two grounds: it doesn’t bear a rational relationship to a legitimate state purpose (sparing peoples’ feelings?); and, as you point out, it discriminates invidiously between those similarly situated: liquor store owners and deli shop owners, so that there is a denial of equal protection under law.
But I think I see your and her point. And there’s no love lost between the sellers and buyers. It’s a rough way to make a living. Not sure why the city doesn’t just enforce existing law. The article says this law doesn’t take effect for four or five years. This woman must have political ambitions beyond councilwoman.

I will bet a donut these shops are run by folks of a different racial heritage than the majority of the council.

Shouldn’t the shame be that of winking at the crime in the area?

I have only seen this type of glass once. My daughter and I were on I65 in or near Birmingham. She said we needed gas but we thought the entrance back on the road might be blocked due to workers. We stopped at the nearest gas station. She did not want to go in to ask the employee if we could get back on. I will talk to anyone. So, I went in and the man was behind glass with a slot for money. It did not bother me in the least. He was protecting himself like he should have. Some people are stuck on stupid. I just do not understand people and it seems to be getting worse the older I get.
