Between the two, the crude man who tells the truth and looks out for his own citizens is preferable to the genteel man who sells us out for cheap labor or ballot-box fuel for a political machine. If Trump is the former, so be it.

If you take working-class Americans (doesn’t matter if Republicans, independents or Democrats)....then ask them to identify a s**thole in the US...they all have a candidate (typically Baltimore, Buffalo, or areas around New Orleans).
I don’t see what the big argument is about. Trump just expanded the discussion to cover countries. I could identify Gorlitzer Park in Berlin as a s**thole because of the drug activity. I could identify a dozen countries in Africa as s**thole places because of rampant disease, corruption, crime, or failures of civilization.
Just last month, some idiots brought a UN ‘club’ down through parts of Alabama, and they said just about everything possible to identify it as a s**thole, without saying the word itself. The news media readily helped them put the theme out there.
Some pretty telling stats that tell us pretty much what we all already know:
The big argument focuses on race.
Hillary called American citizens irredeemable deplorable people. Hussein called us teabaggers. The media largely yawned.
Here, Trump reportedly says this privately about some foreign countries, which are in fact shitholes. He never said that they’re all horrible people.
My mother in law is an aide worker in Haiti. She watched an a colleague get his brains blown out, and they lost a close family friend in the earthquake - a super avoidable catastrophe if they had normal building codes, which they should have with all the money we pumped in there. It’s also an island with some really wonderful people, obviously, but it is in fact a shithole.
No body is coming out saying Haiti ISN’T a s**thole.
The same people who berate Trump and call him a racist for his use of that vulgarity refer to the same countries as “banana republics.” What’s the difference except for the vulgarity? And who leaked the story, in the first place?
Let them figure it out.

While Trump has a point, I think he just lost the vote of every Catholic of Irish extraction. Ireland was pretty much a shithole between 1820 and 1900. (By the way, between 80 and 85% of Haitians are Catholic.) While part of the struggling middle-class that put Trump in the White House, Irish Catholics (practicing or not) have a fierce sympathy for anyone getting the shaft. Trump’s words now make him a shafter rather than the champion of the shaftees, aka “basket of deplorables.” The repercussions are immense: “About 55.3 million Americans—19.5% of the total population—reported Irish ancestry in 2013.”

I saw that on the map too - what I thought was Ireland was labeled Shithole. Yea, tribal fighting, voodoo, honor killings, Ireland had it all. I’m surprised there were people smart enough to find their way to the boat.

Ireland was never a shithole. It was a lovely peaceful rural economy until it had a famine and a couple of plagues and a bad situation caused many to split. You had better read some history before the pie hole starts spewing nonsense.
