I Wouldn’t Entrust a Child to ‘Disgusting’ USA Gymnastics: Gold Medalist
New York Post ^ | January 23 | Jaclyn Hendricks

Shawn Johnson would never put her daughter’s life in the hands of USA Gymnastics, despite her admiration for the sport, the former Olympian seethed in a five-minute video posted on her YouTube channel Monday.

“USA Gymnastics has failed their athletes so terribly,” Johnson said. “I think the fact that any of this ever happened shows that USA Gymnastics has failed as a governing body to protect the athletes it supports and claims to care about.”

Johnson, 26, who won the gold medal in the balance beam competition during the 2008 Beijing games, in addition to silver medals in floor exercises, team and all-around, issued her support for her fellow gymnasts, many of whom have been sexually abused by disgraced former doctor Larry Nassar, who is being sentenced after pleading guilty to multiple charges of sexual assault.

I wouldn’t send my kid to Michigan State. They knew and covered up this pedo pervert for 20 years.

I get the distinct impression that to get to the top in ANY worldly endeavor, sacrifices will need to be made.

And I suspect that if most people knew what those sacrifices would be, before they got started, they would never start.

Did not know this perv was associated with Michigan State. Are they going to get the Penn State treatment?

This is way beyond sacrifices. This is multiple decades of child molestation which was reported to various authorities repeatedly and everybody ignored.

The way it all was found out was when a group of gymnasts were talking and they were overheard by a coach who suddenly realized something was very wrong and she reported it.

I don't think the gymnast culture is to blame. Nasser, like most psychopaths, are very convincing. They all had confidence in him, the coaches and the girls. But, each of the girls had a feeling something was not right. When they compared notes out loud was when the jig ended for him.

This is another case of someone who plied his trade with his perveness, and worked to cover his steps, probably laughing to himself that no one knew.

He got caught and now he must pay.

This is nothing new. I read years ago how foreign trainer-doctors to their female Olympic athletes would get the girls pregnant to increase certain natural chemicals in the system, then have them get an abortion sometime before going into competition.

I think those are two different thing. Sacrifices, yes. You wake up at 4:00 AM, spend hours practicing even if it hurts, forego a normal social life. I think those are the sacrifices most people expect.

What purpose was a "sacrifice" of allowing this person do what they did? How did that help?

The culture is very much to blame. Many of the victims testify to having notified USAG and the Olympic committee to no result. This was one of the least secret secrets out there, the most important thing that coach did was report to somebody OUTSIDE USAG and USOC. There’s a reason heads are starting to role.

Yes. And for each individual it was a sacrifice. Just as any starlet that was assaulted by Weinstein.

I’m just trying to say that the higher the goal, the greater the risk that it is going to cost a lot more than you bargained for, because human beings are involved.

When I say “sacrifices”, I’m using the word broadly. I’m not implying people voluntarily choose to make sacrifices. I’m thinking more like race car drivers dying or gymnasts getting sexually molested.

It’s one thing to expect athletes to “make sacrifices” like the East German women’s swim team and their steroid abuse.

“Gee coach, how come your swimmers have such deep voices?”

“We came here to swim, not sing.”

Yes, that was all very wrong and evil. Those “women” are now middle-aged and are hopelessly screwed up physically from all the male steroids they pumped into them. But thanks to that abuse, East Germany got lots of gold medals. Victory at all costs.

This is different. Nothing about being sexually molested made these girls better gymnasts. It was abuse for its own sake without any pretense of serving a higher purpose.

Could Michigan State be a similar, but heterosexual, case to that of Penn State? Wow!

That’s NOT a sacrifice, that’s MOLESTATION. Sacrifice is not having time for friends, or damaging your body and having mobility troubles late in life. Being repeatedly RAPED by a scumbag that the powers that be cover for is NOT a sacrifice, that’s EVIL. What you’re trying to say comes dangerously close to blaming the victim and excuse mongering a predator and his enablers.

Getting into a crash is a natural risk of race car driving. I am failing to see how getting sexually molested is a natural risk of gymnastics.

These days many teachers are molesting. Does that mean you think that if a parent wants to get their child educated, they have to take the risk of their child being the victim of a crime?

As your uninvited personal advisor, I recommend you retract your original post and admit that it was very poorly worded and awkwardly constructed...

I think the real question here is: Who is making the “sacrifice,” and who is actually paying the price? The dirty little secret in many walks of life is that a lot of parents are perfectly willing to put their children in the hands of sexual predators if that’s the price to be paid for success. Do you think all those young people were abused in Hollywood without their parents’ knowledge?
