I have an aunt who suffered in prison and with alcohol and drug abuse for decades. My mother recently was sending her money to get by, until she got a call from the local grocery store to tell her that my aunt was buying smokes (to later sell to buy booze), so she was cut off.

That is just real life. I can imagine such a scenario, with food stamps, occurs millions of times. Now I live in Canada, but I believe the provincial government, where it can, pays rent for welfare recipients directly to the landlords, knowing that if they didn’t, it, as you said, would be used for drugs and what not.

Since the democrats are always bitching about food deserts, they should be happy with this.

That’s the way it used to be. It was called commodities. They got real cheese instead of lard colored with a dye that toy had to mix into the lard yourself. They got canned ham and other good stuff. The only problem with that now is they will have to cook it. And a majority of welfare people can’t cook and they probably won’t or can’t learn.

The Democrats just LOVE Communism.

They should just give all the American Po’ Folk a rice cooker like Castro did! *SMIRK*

And don’t forget, a LOT of fast food restaurants take food stamps (EBIT cards). Talk about wasting money!!! Restaurant and fast food meals are the most expensive food of all, food stamps should not be used to pay for such things.

It's doable. Think of Nutri-System and Jenny Craig that deliver pre-packaged foods to their customers today. Think of all the national and local start-up companies to deliver food to those who now squander their checks. It would be a huge industry and provide thousands of jobs in the processing plants, delivery systems, admin, etc. I like it.

Plus, watch how many go back to work when they stop getting SNAP in the mail. It happened back in the 90's when Newt's leadership forced Clinton to sign welfare reform and the gimmedats had a limited time frame to suck off the productive.

I’m just glad he didn’t use a modifier like ‘quality.’
Imagine the outrage if he suggested giving people ‘quality food?’

it’s heartless to not have some kind of program to help those truly in need.

Of all possible ways to have such a program, government is the worst. And second worst isn't even close.

I agree! I remember as a kid in the 50s, my grandparents going to pick up their monthly USDA surplus commodities and seeing the large portions ot the things you listed. I would add big blocks of butter (not margarine), big canned tins of a mystery meat (looked and tasted like SPAM), and sugar to your list. Grandma was a great cook and knew how to use whatever was available to her. Nobody starved for sure, including the family dog who got the leftovers.

I remember the grade school lunch programs where they served nutritious 25 cent lunches based around USDA government surplus. Ah, those half tuna/half cheese (I’ll trade you my cheese for your tuna deals) or peanut butter sandwiches, pork and beans, (I think it was) corn, green beans, spinach, and other canned vegetables, canned fruits (peaches, pears etc.) and other mystery items served weekly.

I remember a certain dessert called butter pie. It was a concoction made by placing about 1/2 a stick (or more if there was a lot of butter to use (i.e get rid of)) on a small square of pastry (obviously made from surplus flour), folding the squares ends over, and covering it with a liberal sprinkle of sugar. It was prepared by the cooks in the morning and baked (or under baked) to come out of the oven just in time for lunch. It was a thing to behold, sweet and oozing with butter and messy as h*ll to eat. It seemed like they served it 3 out of 5 days as the dessert of the day. As a kid I liked it until I could not stand the sight of it anymore.

Incidentally, you got a 8 oz glass of fresh (not powdered) milk with the lunch if you wanted it. An extra glass of milk was a penny. If you had a extra nickle, you could get a generous slab of ice cream to tide you over. All this courtesy of the local dairy co-op and provided at reduced cost to the lunch program.

Mama usually packed me a lunch to take to school in my Roy Rodgers lunch kit. On occasion when she didn’t have the time (or other reasons) I got 25 cents to buy my lunch. It was a relief from the left overs and other items I came to dread that she frequently packed for me.

All this to say, the progressives (givemedats, fast food dependent snowflakes, government elites, save the whales/kill the babies vegans, global warmists, gourmet foo-foo/let old people eat dog food types, body worshipers) of today are too special and picky to ever lower themselves to (knowingly) eat anything prepared from government surplus.

Let me close by saying, back when common sense was in vogue, the idea seemed to work to the benefit of all, especially the poor. Let’s try it again. MAGA and respect your elders.

Amen. This Trump guy has great ideas. Help the needy get nutritious food and help farmers at the same time.

Let the cigarette manufacturers and Coca Cola wait for real money.

And if they go to Salvation Army they can buy a terrific used bread maker that bakes the fabulous bread I eat a slice of every morning!

Determines food choices like Michelle’s lunch program

Bwahaha! That's the way to sell this new idea. It's fulfilling Moochelle's enlightened program. It was Mrs. BO'B's idea!
