Connecticut Democratic leaders push to eliminate Electoral College system for Presidential election

HARTFORD, Conn. (WTNH) — Saying 76 percent of state residents support the idea, Democratic leaders at the State Capitol are pushing for Connecticut to become the 12th state to approve a compact calling for the elimination of the Electoral College for electing U.S. Presidents.

They say the Electoral College is an outdated relic of the past.

U.S. Presidents are elected by winning the most states with the most electoral votes. Electoral votes are determined by the size of a state’s Congressional delegation.

California has 55 electoral votes, while Connecticut has just seven.

“There’s no other office in this country, other than the President of the United States, where the person who gets the most votes doesn’t win that office,” said State Senator Mae Flexer (D) with the Government Administration and Elections Committee. “It’s just not right and it’s time for that to change.”

Last year, Republican Donald Trump lost the popular vote to Democrat Hillary Clinton, but won the Electoral College.

This also happened in 2000 when George W. Bush lost the popular vote to Democrat Al Gore but won the Electoral College.

Consider this: a state uses the electoral college system, county by county to elect their governors.

That would be a much improved system over the mob rule we have now.

According to the Constitution, the states get to decide how to allocate electors in their state.

Obviously, the states that think the electoral college is bad should allocate the electors in their state proportionately.

That is in California, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, and Hawaii, the elector should be proportioned by the percentage of votes each candidate gets. If 40% of California voters vote for a Republican candidate, then 40% of the electors from California should go to the Republican candidate.

Other states may do as they wish as well.

Trump won Florida by just over 100,000 votes.

He is almost guaranteed to lose in 2020 unless he gets serious.

The water level in the swamp remains HIGH.

Trump is completely dumbfounded by Sessions the TRAITOR who surrendered control of the DOJ back to the communists immediately after being confirmed.

“A lot of bad things happened on the other side, not on this side, but on the other side. And somebody should look into it, because what they did is really fraudulent and somebody should be looking into that and by somebody, I’m talking about you know who,” Trump told Fox News host Jeanine Pirro, a reference widely interpreted to mean Attorney General Jeff Sessions.

Really?

I expected Trump to act like Pinochet, not a bitch scared of Impeachment.

Drop a MOAB on Congress.

Problem solved.

Not that one wants to be in the position to argue before the Supreme Court that the compact is unconstitutional because it effectively amends the Constitution without following the procedure for amending the Constitution and therefore is null and void. A state may not award its electoral using votes outside of its state boundaries, thus diluting its own vote further.

The “red” states won’t be signing on anytime soon. If the really red (commie) states hold to their compact, I am looking forward to President Trump win reelection in 2020 including the popular vote and seeing these commies send their electoral votes his way because of the compact. Want to bet they won’t?

They don't want federalism, they want one massive country rule.

Doing away with the Electoral College means effectively doing away with states altogether. If states no longer have any meaning in a federation, then we no longer need an apportioned Congress, either.

Somehow, I can't see Congressmen and Senators giving up their offices, so we will be left with a Constitution in name only, defining states, Congress, the Supreme Court, and the President, where only the President and Senators matter, and everything else is rubber-stamped to go along.

To read people’s (ir)rationalization for getting rid of the electoral college speaks volumes about how the trillions of $$$$$ earned on the backs of American people have been wasted on public education.

Don’t Connecticut voters realize that what the Dems are calling for is refusing to support or fulfill the will of voters in their state?

What stops them from then making up their own laws (Executive Decisions by the Governor or Dem Party Head). It’s like in most countries that have gone socialist. They take a vote, win it once, and then take that as a mandate that the voters want a socialist dictatorship for eternity.

If we lose the electoral college, no Republican will win another election.

Do they really think all the states in flyover country will just sit by and let this happen? Not likely.

I think your wrong simply because last year this was pointed out in a mainstream conservative journal, can’t remember. It specifically says what states can and cannot create compacts on and Nullifying the EC is one of the interpretations — but I’ll look it up some more.

What is our reasoning that congress on majority vote can approve this? Curious as to why if it doesn’t need a chnge in the constitution, why a straight up and down majority vote? Cannot the States just enter into pacts by themselves and decide without congress?

I think Connecticut is an outdated relic of the past. Connecticut and Rhode Island should be merged with Massachusetts so they only send two retarded baboons to the U.S. Senate instead of six.

Best response of the day. But why stop there? Let's merge those three states with Vermont so they can be Vermassicut Island. Just two senators. LOL

Not sure I understand the question.

The USSC is a wildcard these days. I believe the weight of legal theory these days would approve the NPVC if Congress agrees, but there is a valid case that it is unconstitutional:

and the alternative case:
