Trump says ‘bump stocks’ are gone, may use executive order to ban device
The Washington Post ^ | 02/28/31 | Mike DeBonis and Seung Min Kim

Posted on 02/28/2018 1:26:19 PM PST by Simon Green

President Trump launched into a freewheeling, televised strategy session with lawmakers over the issue of guns by declaring that he will unilaterally bar so-called “bump stocks” and asking Congress to send him one “terrific” bill aimed at reducing gun violence.

“I’m going to write that out,” Trump said of bump stocks — devices that allow semiautomatic weapons to fire like fully automatic weapons — while speaking to lawmakers gathered at the White House for a much-touted summit on gun safety. Saying he can bar bump stocks with an executive order, Trump added: “You won’t have to worry about bump stocks.”

Trump also pressed lawmakers to send him “one terrific bill” combining several proposals aimed at reducing gun violence, although that could complicate the legislative outlook for such a contentious issue. Congress is already struggling to clear a relatively noncontroversial measure meant to simply improve the reporting of key information to a federal background-checks database.

“It would be so beautiful to have one bill,” Trump told lawmakers at the White House.

The session came weeks after a deadly high school shooting in Parkland, Fla., that left 17 dead and spurred fresh calls for action to tighten gun restrictions.

Trump also repeatedly clashed with Republican lawmakers during the summit as he appeared more sympathetic to Democratic proposals. In one exchange, Trump chastised Sen. Patrick J. Toomey (R-Pa.) for resisting a move that would raise the minimum purchase age for rifles to 21.

When told that a higher age limit wasn’t included in a universal background checks bill written by Toomey and Sen. Joe Manchin III (D-W.Va.), Trump told Toomey: “You know why? Because you’re afraid of the NRA.”

Bumpfire stocks are nothing but a leftist ploy to ban semi autos. The language Feinstein and others are using are “rate increasing” devices. This could be a 3 gun match competition trigger, or a finger on your belt loop.

“As far as the President”

I’m sure that someone near him is still reading FR and relaying things.

Technically the bump stock thing is truly a work-around to the machine gun bans. And to eliminate that is to tidy up the work of the NFA acts. And this is where it’s important to understand the Northeast Republican.

I’m from the Northeast. Connecticut. And I can tell you that these people are NOT what you think of when you think conservative. They are slightly more to the right than the democrats. But a Northeast Democrat will literally slash your throat if you vote or think even a teensy-weensy sliver to the right of their agenda. Think Joe Lieberman. (I mention him alot. I actually know Joe and I know what they did to him).

Everything in the Northeast is skewed to the left. Everything. I have met burly men, veteran men who fought in hard wars and love their country and flag who will immediately recite a list of people who should and should not have rights. They will defend abortion and call me a redneck (In text, but all CT conservatives upon meeting me think I’m a leftist shill because I’m goth with a ton of earrings). And every one of these men are in the NEUS.

They are elitist. They think that they are the penultimate of whatever position they are representing. That no one has a better handle on things than they do. The Nor’easterner is all things that any american is, but all based on that snotty ignorance that has made New England famous.

For any of you in the NE I am open to this debate. I’m from there too and couldn’t take it anymore. I went toe-to-toe with the CCDL and found the true face of the Connecticut conservative. Everyone in Vermont is actually a New Yorker (which is kinda like where I live now) and New Hampshire has a few good guys sprinkled in over the PILES of hippies. Maine is always good. They have good water and good people. The rest is a pit.

That’s a dead on accurate description based on what I’ve experienced from people there.

I was not happy with that or what qualifies as mental health. He’s talking about taking guns away from those with mental health problems possibly without legal process. We need to define it as mental health that is dangerous. How is mentally ill defined? Joy Behar says Mike Pence is mentally ill. See how that works?
>

You can define ‘mental illness’ ‘til the cows come home, but it’s standing ‘innocent until proven guilty’ on its head that’s the sticking-point

The (R)N(C) is going to shoot itself in the foot come ‘18, bending over to kiss their own asses in passing this illegal/unconstitutional POS. I’ll bet they RAM a bill, that’s been sitting on ONE of their HDDs, in lightning speed. It’ll be one of the FEW times they hop on the Trump Train.

I don’t care to own a bump stock. but the grab is a bit troubling. Might get a laugh out of pointing out to libs that Trump is dealing with a gun problem he inherited from Obama.

Trump can direct them to reverse that ruling, inventing some convoluted explanation for including them under machine gun prohibition.
They’ve done it before.
And a smart lawyer can use it to overturn 922(o) and legalize machineguns.”

Interesting point! Many thanks for posting!

I’m sure there will be a lot of never-Trumpers and Democrats who will now get on the Trump train because of what he said to Toomey.”

What did President Trump say to Toomey?

How would it get never-Trumpers & Dems on the Trump Train?

There are lawsuits waiting to happen, pending the BATFE allowing a post-’86 one - a scenario they _can’t_ screw up, and Trump is about to push them into exactly that.”

Again my thanks to you for a very insightful ‘read’ on the issue!!

From the article:

“When told that a higher age limit wasn’t included in a universal background checks bill written by Toomey and Sen. Joe Manchin III (D-W.Va.), Trump told Toomey: “You know why? Because you’re afraid of the NRA.””

I didn’t think a sarcasm tag was necessary.

David Hogg told him that Bump Stocks must go.

Feel lucky if Hogg lets us keep bee-bee Air guns when this is over.

We can have an un-elected teenager suspending our Second Amendment rights and steering the nation into Tyranny.

Only in USA :(

Is this a great country or what?/sarc

Except that the proposed laws would outlaw rubber bands as well...and belt loops...and any other object which is capable of being used in a similar manner.

RE:”We can have an un-elected teenager suspending our Second Amendment rights and steering the nation into Tyranny

Yep, recall when the teens were put in charge of Cambodia in the 1970s under Po Pot, adults were executed for memory sickness.

Memory sickness now will be remembering the right to bear arms not infringed.

Trump running scared.

Gonna wait to see what falls out - why is the WaaaaaPo the main source for this type story? The only thing I made sure to send a message to president Trump was to implore him to not use EO on ANY aspect of the current arguments.

Since one effing judge took the “dreamers” issue off the table, whenever I hear news like this, I’m hopeful it means Trump decided to use his rope-a-dope strategy with Democrats on the gun rights issue.

There should be enough judges to take everything off the table on both sides. At least all executive orders.

We issued M16’s to my Montagnards in Aug 68. I had a CAR 15 as Company CO. The first thing we did was take them to the ARVN’s 23rd Infantry Division range . My NCO’s made sure each man had his weapon zeroed in. Back then we had safe, single shot, and full auto. Most of my yards learned to fire 3-4 round bursts, however: when we ran into VC or NVA we unloaded full auto. The M60’s, M79’s, M16’s plus 60 mm mortar all fired plus a few LAW’s. Those yards had a lot of M79 experience. They could drop rounds anywhere and reload fast.

There are blueprints for bump fire stocks all over the internet. Anyone can print one with a 3-D printer. That said, if mere possession is illegal, a criminal will be more likely to seek out an also illegal to possess AR modified to full auto.

I also believe banning “assault weapons” will lead to more full auto rifles and Uzi type pistols in the hands of criminals.

Who needs an auto fire weapon other then LEO and our military? I never hunted nor would with a 3 round burst much less on full auto. What we need to do is make full auto weapons available to those who want one and those can pass a full BI for a TS clearance plus add a written test plus field safety and firing test.

Who the heck cares about hunting? That's not what the Second Amendment is about.
