Trump stuns GOP, Dems with impassioned push for gun control

President Trump stunned Democrats and Republicans alike on Wednesday by pushing for gun-control measures that have long been poison pills for the GOP and pipe dreams for their opponents.

The president, during a televised, hourlong sitdown at the White House with a bipartisan group of lawmakers, appeared to back a bill proposed in 2013 by Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia and Republican Sen. Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania that would expand background checks for weapons purchases.

The bill — written in response to the 2012 massacre at the Sandy Hook school in Newtown, Conn. — failed in the Senate due to intense Republican opposition.

But Trump called it a good starting point and even questioned whether other ideas championed by Democrats, such as an assault-weapons ban and raising the minimum age to buy a gun to 21, could be included in one bill everyone could agree on.

“Fellas, if you can all get together and we can get one great piece of legislation — people want to see something happen. It would be so beautiful to have one bill that everyone could support,” Trump said as California Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein sat with a stunned smile on her face.

“I think it’s time that a president stepped up. I’m talking Democrat and Republican presidents, they’ve not stepped up,” Trump said.

Trump also shot down the GOP’s proposed Conceal Carry Reciprocity Act, which would allow people with permits to carry guns across state lines.

"It would be better to teach every American to fight back with everything you have when faced by a shooter. You cannot depend on police to do it for you. There will not be time. You must save your own life or lose it."

Winner!!

This is the answer and its so simple.

Fact: A single man, even with a gun, is no match for a crowd. A lone man can only look in one direction, he can only shoot in one direction and it's a fact it's darn near impossible to shoot with five people on top of you. As soon as the nut jobs of this world find out that if they go in some place to try to shoot innocent people they are going to immediately get attacked from every angle the shootings will stop completely. A lone gunman is the easiest mass murderer to stop yet we can't see the forrest for the trees. We have taught people to do exactly the wrong thing and that is to run, hide and wait to die.

THE PRESIDENT: Or, Mike, take the firearms first and then go to court, because that’s another system. Because a lot of times, by the time you go to court, it takes so long to go to court, to get the due process procedures.

I like taking the guns early, like in this crazy man’s case that just took place in Florida. He had a lot of firearms. They saw everything. To go to court would have taken a long time. So you could do exactly what you’re saying, but take the guns first, go through due process second.

Another flat out lie on your part.

Really? did you not see the video (that's being shown on all news outlets) where Trump told Toomey "that's because you're afraid of the NRA"?

Why does it feel like "someone got to him"? The POTUS I voted for would not disparage NRA members.

Yes I watch the video. I’ll link bother video and the transcript. Please review every Trump reference to the NRA and point out what Trump said that justifies this as a coherent opinion;

“Trump should not even be entertaining this NRA as the bad guy narrative and he is.”

66, N/C, just sitting back and watching the slow dimming of that shining city on the hill. I try to feel bad for the younger members of my family, but honestly they support all this crap. They voted for Obama and Hillary, and hate Trump and republicans in general. They’ve even told their parents that they can’t wait until we’re gone so they can clean up the mess we made. To that I say thanks for paying for my SS and Medicare. Enjoy your BLM/LaRaza/LGBTQ run socialist paradise after I’m gone.

You may have a good argument. You may even be right sometimes.

But, all of that is lost with your name-calling and belittling of other commenters.

Quote: “Another flat out lie . . .”

I heard him say to Toomey that he “wasn’t afraid of the NRA unlike the congressional GOP.”

That is the Dems blame the NRA narrative. The NRA scares the GOP from sensible (read outright seizure) gun control. That is what the Dems and MSM push. For Trump to adopt that in any way is not wise on his part.

Re “belittling of others.” He/she really belittles his/her own argument and by extension his/herself.

“That is the Dems blame the NRA narrative. “

No it isn’t. It’s the logical fallacy “too few alternatives” to say it is.

That’s not what those who elected him want. He should have outted the school district and Congress for giving fed dollars to schools and cops for not arresting all these mentally ill and violent punks.

Well, if he moves ahead with this, I can only say that I won’t be too sad when he is unable to stave off impeachment. He will have deserved it royally.

And this;

“He summarily dismissed some of the lawmakers present, of his own party, whom he NEEDS.”

Is a LIE. Very easy to prove. That is not “calling people names or belitting”, it’s calling out a lie that no one, especially here on FR, should believe or post. No reason to not be accurate and truthful when posting here.

It is part of the picture that the democrats use. Their true logic works like this:
1) gun’s, all guns pose a threat (primarily to our desire to impose Soviet style control on the population);

2) shhh, we cant ever say that in public;

3) ok we will ask or “sensible” gun control and use the same incremental tactics to play the long game. The rube will never know what hit them, like with healthcare;

4) but the GOP opposes this (they are on to our true aim);

5) we need an Alinsky bogey man to target and isolate and demonize;

6) cue up some victims to use to blame the NRA not for the actual crimes but by extension;

7) getting the NRA also eliminates huge financial backing for our foes, bonus;

8) announce and put forward that but for the NRA there would be “sensible” (read ultimate seizure) gun control and no shootings. The NRA is therefore to blame because it scares the GOP from doing the right thing; and

9) let’s get a RINO GOP Congressperson or two to accept our premise. Is McCain available? What?!?! Trump will do it?! No flipping way!!! Who needs a phony CNN townhall?

And Trump ALWAYS brings up arming teachers and bullets flying back at the bad guy. I’ve watched Trump talk about offensive and deadly capability within in the schools at official meetings a dozen times in the last week. He’s pounding it in the heads of everyone at the meetings. How does that fit in to your bad Trump scenario?

Context matters!
