MIAMI (CBSMiami) — Florida International University’s massive new pedestrian bridge collapsed Thursday afternoon in West Miami-Dade.

The bridge, located at 109th Ave and 8th Street, collapsed on a number of cars.

There are reports of numerous people injured in the collapse. At least one person was taken as a trauma alert to the hospital, according to Miami-Dade Fire Rescue.

The 950-ton bridge went up on Saturday. It was then lowered into its final position, just west of 109th Avenue that day.

The main span was built next to Southwest 8th Street.

Well, to be fair - the project drawings and design specifications were only written in English ...

And cursive.

Those are the vehicles that wheel the bridge into place.

Wow. If what he’s saying is accurate this is closer to negligence than accidental which compounds the grief and anger of families.

Hard to believe he said that with cameras rolling isn’t it?

Totally bizarre.

Thanks for that pix.

You don’t have to be a structural engineer (and I’m not) to see that any sort of torque (twist) failure and that thing liquifies.

I am willing to believe that the Y-axis is adequately braced against compressive (downward) forces, by the zig-zag [concrete] girders. But that is exactly and only at a perfect 90 degrees from horizontal. On a perfect vertical chord.

Any twisting starts an immediate progressive crumbling failure. That design is utter horses**t, modeled on a 2-D computer screen by someone with zero real world experience.

“This bridge was designed to withstand the stress of a Category 5 hurricane.”

>>Perhaps, but it clearly wasn’t built to withstand one.<<

Excellent point.

Doesn’t seem possible those temp supports were still in place.

It was not even open to walking traffic yet. They placed the bridge on Saturday Looks like they just set it on the concrete barriers on either side and to me doesnt look like the cable supports were attached.

Getting older, but still hanging in there. Glad to see you’re still around. A real shame about this accident. Praying for all concerned.

The span doesn't appear to be long enough to require a central pillar. It isn't that long

Turns out that it did need a center pillar(s) It pulled away and downward from each terminus or one of the terminus

I stand corrected, the bridge broke in half. When it fell the end pulled away from the support.

FL does nothing to shoddy contractors, I know from 3 experiences in my 4 years of living there.

Yep he said something about the crane doing something above the bridge. Something about they were tightening the cables. He was not very clear.

Cables to WHERE? The pylons were not yet constructed.

“Those are the vehicles that wheel the bridge into place.”

Oh, OK. It appears that shoring should have been in place before those mobile jacks were removed, which would have been a good use of a couple of traffic lanes. Hindsight, but would have been obvious even to a child in advance if they’d thought about it.

Don’t see any sign of that central pillar or the suspension lines in the “after” photo. Wouldn’t those be kind of important?

The bridge designers were so clever and modern that they designed it without those ugly center pillars. As in kid riding bicycle - "look ma no hands". BUT it turns out that it did need a center pillar(s) The aftermath looks like the bridge pulled away and downward from each terminus or one of the terminus

Diversity.

It has been foisted on us everywhere, including in engineering.

Libs: “Diversity makes us stronger.”
People with brains: “It does no such thing. It breeds mistrust and anywhere you have diversity you have a drag on prosperity and economic growth.”

It would not have needed ground supports once the suspension was in place.
