I thought Marshall beating Wichita State was an upset too... Marshall will play West Virginia in the next round...
the #1 overall seed losing to the #64 seed
They must’ve taken a cavalier attitude toward the game.
This is a great story for multiple reasons:
* This is the first time in the history of the 64 team tournament (30+ years) that a #16 seed has beaten a #1 seed.
* The key player for UMBC in the victory was a 5’7”, 150 pound point guard.
* Virginia coach Tony Bennet was the epitomy of class in defeat.
A great moment for the sport.
UMBC - never heard of the school. I had to look it up because I had no idea what “UMBC” stood for.
Congratulations to UMBC.
UMBC = “Ugh My Bracket’s Crushed”
or....
UMBC = “Unknown Minor Basketball College”
Well they look like a pretty big deal now!! What a performance.
Today’s version of West Texas State University. An earthquake in the college basketball playoffs.
Watched the beginning of the game and UVA was off on their shooting, pace and shot selection. That said, I no longer recognize basketball as the sport played in the 50’s and 60’s. Somehow it’s evolved into a contact sport that allows almost anything on the court unless someone is shooting. And then the whistle is all too frequently blown. To make matters worse there seems to be inconsistency among referees. Guess that’s why I only look at college basketball in March and never watch the professional games.
Oh my...
The vast majority of brackets are busted in this tourney for those who fill them out...it didn’t take long...
VA lost one of their stars to injury.
Who says there is no “i” in “team”? If your “i”’s suck , or in this case are lost, so does your team.
That’s why we play the games. My brackets are done.
In 1985, the last year of no 3-point shots in college b-ball, Montana State University (#16) lost to Duke (#1) by 2 points.
They had been ahead the entire game until the last few minutes.
More than half of their shots were from outside the three point line...
"....hey don't blame me,Daddy was doing this in the TV room..."
I really don’t follow bassetbowel. To show you how little time I spend on this insanity I thought UMBC was a bank.
UMBC shot over 54% from the field to UVAs while out shooting UVA 50% to 18% from the three. UMBC shot 71% from the line against 50% and out rebounded UVA 33 to 22 to include a 29 to 17 edge in defensive rebounds giving UVA far fewer second chances. UMBC was also getting better shots displaying 16 assists to 5.
UMBC whipped them in almost every offensive category and blew them out in the second half with better conditioning. This is why selecting the teams to compete in tournaments like this is way too much politics and not enough talent. But whats even worse, how many small division teams are still out there that can play just as well if not better than UMBC that are at home watching it on TV while a number of big schools with less talent are making the money for their college so they can remain big and the little schools stay small?
Last year, Gonzaga for their wins caught $8,558,920 listed starting at over $272K a game from the fund. And that’s one team. Kind of makes you wonder who’s getting the big money as it is shared, doesn’t it?

Glorious dose of schadenfraude for all the butt hurt going down in Charlotesville today!
I’d love to see four little or unknown schools in the final! But now the higher ranked teams will not take any opponent lightly, as it appears Virginia did.
March Madness is back
