A Kindergarten Gun Control Walkout? C’mon, Man…

The March for Our Lives school walkouts this week certainly garnered plenty of media attention. Of course, the students who favor strict gun control laws received far more media love than the ones who support the Second Amendment and hardening schools as potential targets, but that’s really just another day that ends in a “Y” for most of the media. One of the walkouts, however, missed out on the attention it might have merited. It took place at Harbor Elementary School in New London, Connecticut. If the phrase “elementary school” already caught your attention you’re on the right track. To make matters even more bizarre, the protesters were almost all five years old because it was a group of kindergartners. (NBC Connecticut)

Students across the nation walked out of school Wednesday in honor of the victims of the Parkland shooting last month, including a group of New London kindergarteners.

“We love school! We love school,” children in New London are chanting in a video posted on Facebook.

While people involved in the walkout involving a group of 5-year-olds at Harbor Elementary School said the demonstration was about school safety, student safety and parent permission have been called into question.

“It was discussed, it was a safety march and we took them out and they chanted ‘we love school’ and ‘honk your horn.’ And we told them that the 17 angels are above in heaven, they’re watching down and they’re proud,” one parent, Olga Vokolou, said.

As it turns out, the teachers who organized this event didn’t inform the parents aside from a post on Facebook and even the school administrators were left in the dark. To defend their actions and make this seem a bit less preposterous, they described it as a “safety drill.” Now, if that’s all that was going on it wouldn’t be a problem. There are already fire drills and similar emergency preparedness routines in schools and having the kids practice in case they need to evacuate because of an active shooter situation or any other threat is a sensible idea.

But that’s obviously not what was going on here. Check out this brief video from the local CBS outlet. You’ll see the toddlers not only chanting “we love school,” but standing by the side of the street and cheering as cars go by. Also, as reported by the school crossing guard, the teachers were holding up signs that read “Enough” and encouraging motorists to honk their horns.

The crossing guard, who apparently has more common sense than the school staff, is quoted as saying, “I thought it was pushing it with that age group. I don’t think they understood what was actually happening.”

Ya think? These are children of four, five or six years. Do you really think they understand the gun control issue, mental health or questions about armed guards? Do you see many kids that age putting down their toy blocks so they can debate the merits of extended capacity magazines? This was no “safety drill” by the school. It was a blatant case of activist teachers using those children as props for political purposes. An actual safety drill would have steered the children to the closest, safe, defensible position where law enforcement and medical assistance (if needed) could reach them. They wouldn’t be standing a few feet from traffic whizzing by in the event of an actual attack.

And yet the school administration and even most of the parents are too indoctrinated to speak out against this. The most they are saying is that they would have liked to have been informed in advance. These kids are probably in more danger from their own teachers right now than they are from a random act of physical violence.

You can walk out till the cows come home. I’m not giving up my guns. I seriously doubt the new Florida ordinance will hold up to a judicial challenge. This is why there are minimum acceptable ages for certain responsibilities, and the ignorance displayed by the new Florida law shows there are exceptions.

When my youngest was in 3rd grade, they were learning about the Bill of Rights.

When I asked about the 2nd, he said the teacher said it was one of the rights most people think needs to be changed.

Parent, teach and principal conference scheduled. We sat down, and I asked the 20-something teacher to explain the 2nd amendment to me.

She immediately went defensive, and said she thought it important that kids understood the “evils of gun violence.”

The principal took it from there. The teacher was instructed to keep her opinions out of the lessons, and was required to reteach the 2nd amendment, while the principal observed.

This was about 10 years ago in a PA burb 45 minutes west of Philly.

Toddlers know better about our Constitutional rights than we do.

They are in charge now.

Don't be blamin the victim.

Tell the students that all movies, television programs and video games which glorify killing will be banned and see how they respond.

I saw Death Wish with Bruce Willis this past weekend.

He made sure they were really dead, saved taxpayers a fortune given the cost of treating gunshot wounds.

A timely movie.

  1. Human beings can not become angels.
  2. How do we know they all made it to Heaven?
  3. How do we know they are all leftists, and therefore proud of the leftist march?

Can you imagine the waffling of those teachers if one or more of those kids would have wandered into traffic or if one of the cars had lost control and wiped out half the class?

It would have been classic Zoidberg ...

I saw Death Wish with Charles Bronson years ago.

The remake can’t compete with the original.

My dad took me to see the original in the movies.

Given that they cast Bruce Willis I figured he would do a great job and he did.

They reworked the screenplay.

It made sense to be in NYC in the 1970s but it make more sense to be in Chicago now.

Also he tracks down the criminals who killed his wife and sent his daughter into a coma and is pretty ruthless in getting revenge and information from them.

Agreed. BTW, up until recently the head of the agency that issued Florida CCW was named Charles Bronson. His signature was on the card.
