USS Ralph Johnson commissioned in Charleston before a crowd of thousands
The Post and Courier ^ | Mar 24, 2018 | Gregory Yee

U.S. Sen. Tim Scott stood atop the deck of the massive gray warship docked in Charleston Harbor on Saturday morning and asked members of the crowd to transport themselves back to 1968 — a time of social strife amid the civil rights movement.

Out of that period and out of Charleston, a city with its own history of racial issues, comes a singular story: that of Pfc. Ralph Johnson, a Marine who was killed in Vietnam after jumping on a grenade that landed in his fighting hole, Scott said. His actions cost him his life but saved two fellow Marines and earned him the Medal of Honor, the nation's highest military decoration.

Great day for the US Navy and for our nation! Hope this ship never encounters hostilities, but if it does the outcome is one sided and swift! Thanks to the 315 brave men and women who are stationed aboard.

Does it REALLY matter? Do it in a blue state and see what happens.

The ship is a little over 500 feet long and displaces roughly 9200 tons. It cost around 2 billion dollars and is outfitted with the latest electronics and weapons systems. Potentially, it is one of the deadliest ships on the ocean.

DiFi wanted the battleship Missouri stationed in S.F. when she was Mayor. Hunters Point Naval Shipyard was eventually closed but SF was once very pro military. How times have changed. I think any feminist would be happier knowing there were horny G.I.’s out there that were lonesome.

Great picture, thanks.

There were lots of speakers today at the ceremony. I am very disappointed, though not surprised that “The Post and Courier” chose to highlight the divisiveness of our past, rather than emphasize the honor of posthumously awarded Medal of Honor recipient Ralph Johnson, who sacrificed his life for his fellow soldiers.

These Littorial ships are small and with the communications capabilities they have, they can direct and coordinate a large array of sea battle from a long distance away. They have a small radar and sonar signature and although their firepower may be limited; their extension of power is considerably larger than their footprint.

Ah...
For a minute there I was thinking Hank Johnson.

I feel much better about our Best and Bravest.

So, conservatives and FR have caved in to the lunacy of putting women on warships?

Arleigh Burke class are nice ships, and probably survivable as long as they keep threats a long way out.

Absolutely correct. They don’t directly engage, far from it. They stay away and direct the “bad news” to those deserving of the TLC from our side. Ideally, they never know who is doing the directing and coordination.

My point is that there are people out there who loathe the military. BJ was one. South Carolina would not put up with that kind of crap. Obama was another. He got elected twice so it doesn’t matter.

They’re great ships and quite survivable.

Many of us haven’t caved, but personally, I have had to accept this battle is over. I think it is insanity, but they aren’t going to change it.

I don’t blame the women themselves who are serving, I blame the people who made the decisions over the years to put them there.

It is insanity. And I doubt we will be able to keep women out of direct combat roles either. Society seems bent on it, and they are going to lower the standards far enough to let it happen.

And putting them in direct combat roles (which is what a warship is) isn’t just lunacy, it is suicide on a national scale.

Makes me sick. We are going to lose military personnel, engagements, battles, and wars due to this. Mark my words. I was encouraged that Trump at least seemed to take a step back with the transgender crap. But women in combat roles, and open homosexuality is already a done deal.

I have a hard time believing this has come about in my lifetime.

No, it is not one of the “littoral” LCS class ships.

It is an Arleigh Burke class destroyer, an updated version of ships we have deployed since the 1990s.

I don’t know where the commenter got the $2 billion figure. The price tag I have seen for this ship is $700 million. Still a hefty sum, but nowhere near $2 billion.

“But women in combat roles, and open homosexuality is already a done deal.”

I will never accept that.

“I have a hard time believing this has come about in my lifetime.”

It seems to me that the pace of events has accelerated, but that could be just the result of my getting slower with age.

The announced contract for DDG-114 was $697.6 million. I don’t know if the final figure changed but that is what was announced with the contract:
