Syrians with a German residence permit are increasingly traveling to Turkey, often with the help of smugglers, an investigative report from German broadcaster NDR reveals.

The main reason for many refugees is to reunite with their families. As the refugees don’t receive visas to travel to Turkey, they often take risky routes back into the country, the report from the program Panorama explained.

Using social media outlets such as Facebook, the refugees post on several online groups to gain insights into the “reverse escape” into Turkey, in which they also share information about the prices of smugglers. A journey over the Evros, the river which divides Greece and Turkey, costs about €200, the Panorama report revealed.

The reporters conducted their research along the Turkish-Greek border, interviewing several smugglers themselves. One confirmed that he brings up to 50 people, mostly Syrians who hold a German residence permit, into Turkey from Greece on a daily basis. Another smuggler said he brings more refugees into Turkey than vice-versa. […]

Around 4,000 Syrian refugees have been reported as missing, according to the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF), among which could include those traveling into Turkey, Panorama reported. However, this number could be much higher, as it is not recorded if a person were to travel to a fellow European Union country such as Greece. …

I was in a small town in Germany last year, a bit off the beaten path. Stopped in a restaurant in the middle of the afternoon, and me and my son were the only ones in there.

I asked the owner/worker if he spoke English or French. He indicated no. After getting our food, he figured out we were Americans. Then he wouldn't leave us alone. In broken English it was...."I'm Syrian, but I'm Christian." Then he kept making the sign of the cross. "Muslims crazy. Blow up kids, strap bombs on kids. Crazy. Me Christian."

Strangest thing. Then "I love America". And he wouldn't shut up. Seemed genuinely excited to have Americans in his place (again, we were way off the beaten path). Wish we could have communicated better, because he seemed like he had stories to tell. Almost like he was embarrassed of his country, and again, couldn't stop professing his Christianity. Just a really odd experience.

So basically, they are illegally entering Turkey so they can reunite with their families and then illegally take them back to Germany with them?

Over the past four years, I’ve come across a number of Syrians like the guy you described. I think the bulk of Syrians that came (probably 90-percent) are respectful people and they view this ‘second-chance’ in life as a positive thing.

The other positive feature that you tend to notice with Syrians is that they are family-orientated.

Could the departing Syrians please take fellow Germany-hater Andrea Merkel with them?
