President Trump's private lawyer, Michael Cohen, on Wednesday dropped a pair of lawsuits against media outlet Buzzfeed and private investigation firm Fusion GPS that claimed libel after Buzzfeed published the Trump dossier, which detailed possible ties between President Trump and Russia.
"The decision to voluntarily discontinue these cases was a difficult one," Cohen's attorney David Schwartz said, according to Politico. "We believe the defendants defamed my client, and vindicating Mr. Cohens rights was, and still remains, important. But given the events that have unfolded, and the time, attention, and resources needed to prosecute these matters, we have dismissed the matters, despite their merits."
Cohen abandoned the lawsuits after his office, home, and hotel room were raided by the FBI as part of an ongoing criminal investigation into his conduct as Trumps fix-it man.
By dropping the lawsuits, Cohen could avoid being questioned by lawyers from Fusion GPS or being required to turn over evidence related to the case, which could weaken his defense in the criminal investigation. "
I'd suggest that the Rooskie Embassy could perform that function.
I have no doubt the illegal Mueller raids influenced Cohen’s decision to drop the cases. But the only potential they had was finding out how things came to be, via demands for documents and depositions from GPS and Buzzfeed. That would only happen if the cases survived many tests, motions to dismiss, and appeals after Cohen lost the motions. The libel cases themselves were sure losers; it would be darned hard to establish that the defendants knew what they published about Cohen was false. They also can profess motives to publish other than malice towards Cohen (malice towards Trump perhaps, but Cohen was a bystander). Since Fusion GPS did not actually “publish” the material, Cohen would also have to stablish that GPS’s activities spreading the dossier constituted libel (seems more like slander). This looks to me like dropping the cases before a judge dismissed them.
I think Cohen will flip and I think that Trump was aware of that already. Trump will use it and the furor that follows to the advantage of Trump and America.
This is all a charade to have any information handed over to the NY state attorney general where they can go after Trump in state courts.
When a "special counsel" has the ability to bring the full brunt of the FedGov down on top of your head while simultaneously BANKRUPTING you and your family as you attempt to defend yourself, it certainly puts you into a position of wanting to save your family all the financial strife that's sure to come by cutting a deal.
This is exactly what Mueller did to Flynn, is doing to Manafort and will do to Cohen.
So Mueller has his campaign of cooking up false charges against everyone Trump ever met.
Trump needs to adopt the same game.
There is no reason that the Secret Service and Military Intelligence cannot be used to investigate and lodge conspiracy charges against Mueller and his people.
Farfetched you say? Unprecedented? Strained reasoning?
Same comments about Mueller’s extreme abuse of judicial power.
Trump needs to adopt the same take no prisoners game and push the envelope as Mueller is doing.
Let Weissman conduct his “investigation” from Guantanamo.
I just don’t understand Trump’s choice in lawyers.
Something doesn’t make sense.
Honestly, I wish PDJT would announce Mueller's firing, clear all the FBI's "leadership" out of their posts, eliminate all the left-over Obama appointees and rebuild the FBI from scratch.
It's become a joke. So much so that my oldest son who's being recruited by the FBI as he completes his Junior year at one of the top five Criminal Justice & Law Enforcement universities that the FBI is known to recruit from, is giving serious thought to turning them down and going another path.
When all this crap with the "Russian Collusion" investigation started, Comey's "mis-steps" in exonerating Shrillary and more he's become quite disillusioned with his initial choice of going with the FBI. Not sure where he might want to go next. He's an Honor Society/Centennial Scholar so he'll have options at least.

Cohen’s move actually protects the President.
The suit would have opened Cohen up for discovery.

Thank you, Mrs Thatcher.
” I wish PDJT would announce Mueller’s firing”
And the Rats have been playing the don’t cross that line with him, because they want to construct a Saturday Night Massacre narrative.
That’s a ploy that he needs to a) call them on and b) up the ante.
It really is a conspiracy to overthrow the President based on false charges, they know it and so does everyone else now. Getting rid of any attempts to expose the Fusion GPS fabrication factory is clearly one of the key objectives of raiding Cohen’s office. They can’t have anyone discovering and stopping their false intelligence operations. That’s how they remain in power.
I know that was sort of tongue in cheek, but you bring up a very interesting point. The Democrats, DNC, and their supporters and facilitators in the intelligence agencies and elsewhere in government have been used to running things without public scrutiny or any kind of valid oversight. They've had everything set up so they got away with illegal activities, and no one ever heard about.
Then comes WikiLeaks and the embarrassing inner workings of the Democrat party, the DNC, and their connections within DC and elsewhere were laid bare. If there was an element of Russian surveillance contributing to any of this, it's no wonder why blaming the Russians and potentially closing down or attenuating their intelligence operations would be such a major priority. The left doesn't appear to care about 'state secrets', but cares a ton about 'party secrets'.
The Feds will take down, and destroy as many people’s lives as is necessary to get to the one person they are after. In this case it’s President Trump.

Or we could just have everyone pledge an oath fealty to President Trump instead of the US Constitution. That way they wouldn’t pursue the idea that no one is above the law. The rule of law could be forgotten and the interest of the extended first family could come first. We could wallow in the same political culture and ethics of a Third World country. Our leaders could have their personal family in the cabinet despite a lack of experience and knowledge and even if they cannot get a Security Clearance, even if they lie on their SF-78. It used to be a felony to lie on these forms, but in the war with the nefarious deep state it’s necessary to lie. This new age president that is now the apotheosis of victory over the deep state could call presidents of other nations, say, Panama, and lobby on behalf of his private business. He could have his son-in-law seek half billion dollar loans for his personal business. There are so many ways we could run this country in a shameless fashion freed from the conservative values that many people on the surface claim to espouse. We must destroy the deep state that would stop a president from pursuing his pecuniary desires and help could expose his lewd behavior, which was all before he was president.
No one is (or should be) above the law, which is why we can't tolerate having people like Lynch, Comey, Strzok, Page, and the myriad others who covered for Hillary Clinton's illegal activities, in our agencies and government. We just can't.
We absolutely do not need, and should NEVER EVER tolerate having unelected people in government positions (FBI, CIA, any agency, etc), or non-government people like Soros, making decisions for the rest of us about who should represent us.
Conservative is not a way of acting or dressing or carrying yourself. You and I probably agree strongly about morality, principles, decorum etc., but there are plenty of people who overtly carry themselves with decorum and what some would call ‘class’, but who hide the lowest common denominator of behavior behind that facade. Conservatism, to me, is at its core the belief in individualism, freedom, and self-determinism. It's not about whether you'd ‘fit in’ at a Republican national convention, or if your Tweets are crass.
What I enjoy is knowing that bearing false witness holds the same penalty as adultery... Course now neither of the GOPe ineligible candidates, were publicly given the anal exam that private citizen Donald Trump has been given. Wonder, would either of those have passed the ‘purity’ in marriage test... ‘Oh, Mandy’ and iCarly notwithstanding.
He fired all of them very early on.
New York has a one-year statute of limitations for libel claims. So while Cohen dropped his cases "without prejudice," he probably can't re-file.
