President Trump asks Pentagon to look at options for withdrawing troops from South Korea: report

President Trump has asked the Pentagon to look at options for reducing the number of U.S. troops stationed in South Korea as he prepares to meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, The New York Times reports.

The U.S. currently has roughly 28,000 soldiers stationed on the Korean peninsula. It’s unclear if the plans will call for a full or partial withdrawal of troops.

Some at the Pentagon are concerned that bringing troops home from South Korea ahead of Trump’s meeting with Kim could create tensions with neighboring Japan, the Times reported.

Kim and Trump are expected to meet in the coming weeks as the U.S. pushes for the denuclearization of North Korea. Trump said Tuesday a date and location for the meeting will be announced in the next "couple of days."

If that is confirmed, it's quite incredible when one thinks of last year's tensions...

The North Koreans have impressive experience in border security. And I bet they work cheap.

Trump should ask them to tender.

Hey, long time! Ca va?

In regards to Mr. Kim and other leaders of North Korea, yes, we can hope. It would yet be quite a pleasant surprise! We’ll see.

Thanks to you all for the help in Syria, Afghanistan, Iraq (and Iran behind the scenes) and elsewhere.

As for what people see from the news media, situations are often not as they appear to be during such interesting times. A few of us know that.

In regards to last year’s tensions, do you remember the behavior of childhood bullies in a schoolyard? They sometimes don’t react nicely to reason and explanations. Sadly, though, they don’t react nicely to anything. We’ll see, though. Never can tell about tomorrow for sure.

Wanna make a bet that he didn’t just limit the Pentagon ‘exercise’ to just South Korea? I’ll bet he even suggested a review of US troops in Europe as well.

If they sign a peace treaty ending the Korean War...shocking as it sounds...I would imagine some movement by the end of 2017, with 3,000 US troops out of South Korea, and the bulk gone by the end of 2020.

If were to detail out the use of the removed troops....I’d put a third of them into Alaska, and the rest along the US border. Fort Huachuca would be a fine choice to put some of them. And White Sands might be a good location for several thousand.

Art of the Deal........

Trump is always tossing bones to the media...and at the same time pondering.

This is the difference between Trump and Obama.

With Obama....all of a sudden we've joined TPP, Paris Climate, DACA, the Iran Deal....etc etc

At least President Trump puts stuff on the table.

Last time we pulled out of South Korea we were back in 364 days, at a cost of 54,246 men.

...so I’d recommend we be VERY CAREFUL before taking that step again.

Not really jumping the gun - his order pretty much says to dust off previous such plans and bring them up to date - no way he’s going to leave until there is true stability between the North and South.

Re your school house bully comment.

A bully, school yard or otherwise will never go after someone they know will fight back. No one ever feared Obama because they knew he would never fight, ditto Carter when the embassy was taken over by “students”.

Within a day or so of Reagan being inaugurated the American captives in IRAN were freed and as we see happening now the N Koreans at least so far are reacting in a similar way to Trump, due to his willingness to maintain and ramp up the crippling sanctions on NK.

First, I support wholeheartedly the withdrawal of our troops there.

But the prospect of that probably sends shivers down the spine of SoKor, as that will create a big void in economic activity throughout the peninsula.

And by extension the entire region.

The world has been using us as a crutch for far too long. Militarily and economically. Past time to take care of ourselves.

If peace does come to the Korean peninsula then it’s going to be because we have a President that has taken two positions that no past president has. First, making it clear that he has no problems with a military strike on North Korea if that’s what it takes to prevent Kim from being able to strike the U.S. Second, making it clear to South Korea that we may not be willing to help defend them in the event of war. It provided the incentive that both countries needed to go the extra mile to end, or at least greatly reduce, the possibility of conflict between them.
