A consensus seems to be emerging in much of Washington that President Trump gave away too much and got too little in his summit meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in Singapore this week. Granting the Hermit Kingdoms brutal dictator a photo op with the leader of the free world, promising to suspend large-scale U.S.-South Korean military exercises, offering to find a way to guarantee North Koreas security and virtually ignoring the countrys horrible human rights record all while getting little out of Kim other than the usual vague, nonbinding promise to denuclearize might seem a long way from the art of the deal.
Critics warnings about not celebrating prematurely or awarding the Nobel Peace Prize just yet are warranted. But unlike the case with his demeaning treatment of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau just days before, in this one, there may be a method to Trumps madness. There is at least reason to hope for a successful arms-control and broader detente process.
Consider first some of Trumps purportedly excessive giveaways. Yes, there was a lot of pomp and circumstance at this summit, and perhaps a bit too much fawning over the North Korean strongman. But if diplomacy is to have a chance, some effort to build camaraderie is sensible especially after the volleys of insults between Trump and Kim in 2017 seemed to bring the world to the brink of war.
.. Trump followed the same strategic logic of his three White House predecessors in recognizing the need to emphasize the threat North Korea poses to his own nation and its allies.

He laid out the potential future for N Korea, depending on how they will act in the future.
It occurs to me that all the ankle biters in the press and in Congress are unwittingly playing Bad Cop to Trump’s Good Cop. It may make Kim feel better about whatever Trump ends up offering him.
Consensus my ass. Who cares that war games were stopped? Nobody. This just represents talking points being parroted by the leftist media.
A consensus is emerging that The Washington Post reports fake news.
Geez, you’d think it was Roosevelt at Yalta.
Just dropped in to tell everyone not to bother reading the Deep State op called the Washington post. There is plenty of fake news elsewhere.
I note that, so far, Trump hasn’t flown pallets of cash to Little Rocket Man.
Why would anyone dismiss it??
Trump found a world leader with a worse haircur than his, and spun that fat little commie around in his waterproof black smock.
Only our domestic lefties could find fault with that.
Amazon needs to go.
Notice how this writer has to be defensive about stating the obvious?

“Why would anyone dismiss it??”
My thought exactly.
But it is a priori and standard operating procedure for the anti-Trump hysterics.
Hide and watch! Nothing is what it seems with Pres. Trump calling the shots!
Its’s rather comical to watch the Democrats prance around hissing and moaning over this.
We can now compare what was done here, how open and transparent Trump’s process was, to Obama’s secretive and still not fully understood deal with Iran.
Obama gave $1.5 billion in cash to Iran. Iran promptly gave it to terrorist groups.
Trump has promised to stop war games that can be restarted at any time.
That’s it.
If Kim follows through, there would be a chance for business to take off in North Korea, and it’s people’s lives vastly improved.
Maybe Obama and his crew can explain how the Iranian’s lives were improved by his tremendous deal. (as if)
Exactly right...
And since when did the Left back war games there anyway?
What’s with this consensus business? Consensus among whom? The liberals? Chuck Schumer and his gloom and doom analysis of the proceedings???
I can’t see any viable system not involve an exile for Kim and his men. North Korea has excellent reason to loathe him. It ought to be China that has to take responsible for his care here. China propped the Kim dynasty up.
