EU threatens $294B in retaliatory tariffs if Trump imposes foreign car levies

The European Union threatened retaliatory tariffs on $294 billion of U.S. exports if the U.S. imposes tariffs on cars and car parts from the EU, Reuters reported.

The EU sent a submission to the U.S. Commerce Department on Friday claiming tariffs on EU automobiles could increase costs for manufacturers in the U.S.

The submission comes as the Commerce Department investigates automobile imports to the U.S.

The EU submission also reports a 25 percent tariff could have a $13–14 billion negative impact on U.S. gross domestic product, Reuters reported.

According to the report, the EU exported $43.6 billion worth of cars to the U.S. last year, while approximately $7.2 billion worth of cars went from the U.S. to the European bloc.

Trump has slapped billions of dollars’ worth of tariffs on a number of countries in recent weeks, including tariffs on steel and aluminum from the EU.

He said in an interview on Sunday that the European Union “is possibly as bad as China, just smaller” when it comes to trade practices.

“It’s terrible what they do to us,” Trump said in an interview with Fox News. “Take a look at the car situation. They send their Mercedes in, we can’t send our cars in.”

Trump last month tweeted the U.S. will place a 20 percent tariff on EU cars coming to the U.S. “if [EU] Tariffs and Barriers are not soon broken down and removed.”

Match them and take all our troops out of Europe.

Of course, it never enters the minds of the EU powerbrokers to lower their Tariffs as Pres. Trump has suggested that they do.

Exactly. The EU is a hostile, anti-freedom entity. It should be treated as such.

Good. Gives Trump the rationale to restore the tariffs.

Morons, you have a $150 billion trade surplus. We can take this all the way but you’re gonna be out $150 billion.

There is a method to this madness.

President Trump is playing the long game, which politicians HATE.

We HAVE been taken advantage of and the way that has worked is by just letting cheaper goods in from elsewhere via illegal/unfair low wages or illegal/unfair government subsidies.

But we get cheap goods so no one squawks except those in the affected industries and who cares about them, right?

Now we put a stake in the ground, make it clear we mean it and the RESTART the trade process from an even footing.

But few people can see this. I am NOT aggrandizing myself as “smarter than the rest.” I like to think Conservatives in general can see this.”

“EU threatens $294B in retaliatory tariffs if Trump imposes foreign car levies”

I believe that the EU is really that stupid!

I believe they will do something stupid and in turn their car sales will plummet — We already have a trade imbalance with them so what do we have to lose — This is like the punch line to the joke about the guy pointing the gun at his head and saying don’t you laugh, you’re next.

Really, who are they threatening — The United States of America imported the highest dollar value worth of cars during 2017, with $179.6 billion (23.9% of total imported cars).

So 1/4 essentially of all cars sold in the US are imported.

2.Germany: $58.5 billion (7.8%)
3.China: $49.9 billion (6.6%)
4.United Kingdom: $44.1 billion (5.9%)
5.Belgium: $36.4 billion (4.8%)
6.France: $34.7 billion (4.6%)
7.Italy: $31.2 billion (4.1%)
8.Canada: $28.7 billion (3.8%)
9.Spain: $20.2 billion (2.7%)
10.Australia: $17.5 billion (2.3%)
11.Netherlands: $12.8 billion (1.7%)
12.Mexico: $11.5 billion (1.5%)
13.Japan: $11.1 billion (1.5%)
14.Switzerland: $10.5 billion (1.4%)
15.Austria: $10.1 billion (1.3%)

Tell me again who this hurts the most — Where is the EUs negotiating power coming from...clearly the globalist need to go back an study economics again. They Fail!!!

They will lose!!!

Trump is simply reminding the world that the world needs the US a hell of a lot more than the US needs them...

That’s exactly what Trump wanted them to do, too.

Eliminate all tariffs, or set them at an equal rate with the EU. Why is this so hard?

I love this. I firmly believe our potus knows what he is doing and support him hugely in this.

Can't wait till Michigan gets a huge maple syrup industry going. Ours tastes better and will cost less than Canadian stuff.

I have read for years how we have the potential to supply much much more to the industry. Now is the time. Go Michigan.

Consummate free traders haven't got a clue.

These nations don't import our goods, but they want free access to our purchase dollars.

Those days should come to an end. You want to do business? Fine. Now let's have some near balanced trade, for the first time.

We buy your goods when you buy ours.

Call their bluff. They want American consumers to buy their tiny cars.

Crush Germany and Merkel and take the troops out, too.
Poland might be happy to have them.
