When Donald Trump started running for the Republican nomination for president in June 2015, he began by attacking the Republican establishment in Washington, and he began his attack by calling the establishment "the swamp."
His real target was the permanent government and its enablers in the legal, financial, diplomatic and intelligence communities in Washington. These entities hover around power centers no matter which party is in power. Beneath the swamp, Trump argued, lies the deep state. This is a loose collection of career government officials who operate outside ordinary legal and constitutional frameworks and use the levers of government power to favor their own, affect public policy and stay in power. Though I did not vote for Trump -- I voted for the Libertarian candidate -- a part of me rejoiced at his election because I accepted his often repeated words that he would be a stumbling block to the deep state and he'd drain the swamp.
On Monday night, he rewarded the swamp denizens and deep state outliers by nominating one of their own to the Supreme Court.

I grew up in the same area (a leftist bastion). Family still lives there. I’m the same age as Kavanaugh. Knew many of Kavanaugh’s classmates, in fact. Playing the odds: Maybe some RINOs, but originalists don’t come out of Bethesda/Potomac and stay living there for their lifetime. Sorry. Tell me how I’m wrong.
There is no doubt that the good Judge is far from the sharpest knife in the drawer. I used to follow and heed his opinions but, no more. He now rests with the Fox News Channel, idiots and morons, Shepard Smith, Neil Cavuto, Charles Gasperino, Chris Wallace...all of them almost always never right in their verbage. Sad, disappointing & sickening at the same time!!!
The problem is that he is not immortal. He will have to retire someday (or will die in office). Waiting beyond next summer is a hell of a crap shoot.
I think that Trump will will reelection in 2020, but at this point we do not know for sure that he will even want to run again or who the Democrat candidate will be. Plus after this next election, I don't see any the Republicans increasing their Senate majority anytime soon.
So Thomas can either choose to retire next summer, when he knows that Trump will replace him with another conservative, or risk having to wait another 4, 8, 12 years or more before there is another conservative President and Republican controlled Senate.

Yep, someone who is very intimately intertwined from a young man until now.
I usually listen to POTUS Trump rather than watch him, but I did watch this.
Seemed different somehow watching him, his hair was more unusual than usual, the tie color was unexpected, his voice... I dunno, just seemed different.
Whenever I think about all he has kept US from and from US, I get a twinge of fear and then I pray for him and his family. Watching him announce Kavanaugh was one of those times.
And with the usual swamp creatures acting in character towards Kavanaugh, it all makes me wonder what arts were behind this deal.
Win some, lose some, just have to wait and see which this will be.
I feel the same way about "Da Judge". One can almost always figure that the opposite of what he says is true.
Thomas has expressed his desire to retire to colleagues. He has been an outstanding SCOTUS Justice and deserves to spend his “golden” years as he pleases. His retirement will give us a chance to install someone in his place that could extend up to 30 years his judicial philosophy. Good for him on many levels!
There is no where to go but up when/if Trump gets to replace Ginsburg. So that would be a huge improvement.
On the other hand, there’s no way he can replace the great Clarence Thomas with a more reliable Justice so that is a guaranteed net loss when/if it happens.
Sometimes the perfect is the enemy of the good. Kavanaugh may be too "establishment" for my liking too, but we need to keep in mind that there are at least 2 Republicans (Murkowski and Collins) who are likely to vote with Democrats against confirmation if Trump picks anyone perceived to be too hardline (i.e. Bork all over again). There's also the absence of McCain to contend with, and the fact that even when present he sometimes sides with Democrats too.
So the question isn't whether Kavanaugh is perfect or even great, but whether he's as good a selection as is likely to be confirmed. As someone else mentioned, he's probably more solid a conservative than Kennedy was, which already shifts the court in a better direction.
Napolitano certainly knows the law and I like learning from him but I don’t always agree with him. He hasn’t done anything yet that makes me not believe him, like a Karl Rove type of person. Anyhow Napolitano is FoxNews’ Judge Judy
I see Napolitano as a mental case. He’s been wrong so many times that I trust nothing he says.

Judge Napolitano is playing a role on Fox News. He gets lots of help and scripts to say what they expect him to say. Occasionally, he is allowed to say what is on his mind, but only when it fits the Fox News narrative.
I know Juan Williams and he plays a similar role, though he get different scripts. Most of what Juan says comes from the character that he is playing. Both of them are phonies.
There are much better judicial and constitutional analysis than Nap. I listen to Turley, I seldom listen to Nap. Didn’t Nap say that guy who released thousands of classified documents from the NSA, including the names of our CIA agents etc was a national hero?

Kavanaugh is not a conservative. He is a moderate, so some times he’ll make the Rats happy and some times he’ll make us happy. The trick is on what cases he spreads this happiness.
He was suspended by saying the Trump campaign was being wire tapped. As it turned out he was right. He backed off and apologized. His source was right. My problem is the guy wimped out.
They both have one thing in common. They were/are serious physical fitness buffs. The Buzzard works out with her private trainer everyday. I was actually impressed when I read about her level of fitness. I suppose that is the closet "nice" thing I can say about her, although also I'm awestruck by her ability to "power nap" anytime, anywhere.
I don’t see 70 year old Clarence Thomas going before 80 year old Steven Breyer. Thomas is oly 2 years older than Alito for goodness sake. It is not as if he is diabetic or similar.
Man, just imagine Ginsburg and Breyer replaced with principles Conservatives. The Conservative 5 would just steamroll Roberts. Fag-en and Sort-a-my-whore might as well just stay home. They would be impotent.
It is not impossible that Ginsberg dies and Breyer retires during Trump’s 2nd term. The only question is if this would happen before Trump becomes a lame duck. There is no way the Democrats will allow the Senate to confirm a SCOTUS nominee durimg Trump’s last 18 months.
