We won’t stop California’s wildfires if we don’t talk about climate change
The Washington Post ^ | August 9, 2018 | The Editorial Board

CALIFORNIA, THE nation’s most populous state and the world’s fifth-largest economy, is on fire. In a state already known for monster conflagrations, the past month has been unusually destructive. The Mendocino Complex fire north of San Francisco is now officially the largest in California’s history, having burned an area about the size of Los Angeles, and it is just one of the major blazes the state has had to face since last October.

As much as the president might prefer to point fingers elsewhere, it is impossible to talk about California’s blazes without considering the role of climate change. Four of the five largest conflagrations the state has had to battle have come since 2012, and that is probably no mere coincidence. Droughts, storms and heat waves have occurred throughout history, of course, and it is hard to attribute any single event to climate change. But scientists have concluded that climate change has increased the frequency of extreme weather and will continue to do so.

A 2016 study concluded that human-caused climate change is responsible for about half the additional drying that researchers have found since the 1970s, resulting in a doubling of the area forest fires have consumed since 1984. Climate change may also increase lightning strikes, which are a major source of wildfires, and generate the high winds that can drive big blazes. Meanwhile, earlier springtime melting means that the land has more time to dry out over the warmer months. Global warming will increasingly prime the environment for spectacular disasters.

So much of the U.S. Forest Service’s budget has gone to firefighting that too little has been left for care and restoration. Lawmakers should examine the many ways they can help prevent another summer like this one - or worse.

“We won’t stop California’s wildfires if we don’t talk about climate change”

Because “talking” about doing something someday stops fires...

This latest fire is a result of a kook arsonist.

It has nothing to do with AGW....................

They used to cut fire breaks and do controlled burns but they stopped doing that because it was harmful to the environment. Like an uncontrolled wildfire is good for the environment. There is nothing worse for the environment than an environmentalist.

I've looked at the reasons for most all these fires as well as some ancillary ones as well. Each has a valid cause that has NOTHING to do with climate change.

Basically, if you just hired up kids every summer (age 16-to-20) to handle some brush work, under a Ranger-’Bob’ kind of character....then all this fancy fire work wouldn’t be necessary.

People fail to see that going back for the past dozen decades....all this kinda repeats itself unless you go and do some brush work.

Create the problem by prohibiting the removal of excess flammable biomass, then blame global warming when the disaster we engineered occurs.

Check.

...

Of course not. The state’s own crooked policies are causing it.

There is no man made climate change

There is however natural changes in the climate over the centuries. Long before man existed, earth’s climate changed. There is proof of that fact.

As recently as 10,000 years ago, parts of California was buried under a glacier. The earth warming up (global warming) caused the ice to melt and the glacier to recede helping to create the Yosemite Valley.

The lack of common sense in the regulated forest husbandry thanks to the EPA is the biggest criminal act of the EPA. Brush fires don’t have fuel when the brush is controlled.
