...in which crooks hack a bank or payment card processor... Doesn't sound like it has anything to do with ATMs being hacked. Instead they are used the normal way with cloned cards.

If they are running Windows on those ATMs they are asking for it. Read an article a while back that said a lot of ATMs are running Win XP and cannot be updated without replacing the hardware, an expense the bank's don't want to pay.
Looked for the article, can't find it. Maybe it was a bunch of hooey.

Local bank,a few months ago, ATM was in crash mode...Windows XP. Yep, a disaster in the making.
