I live in Alaska. Driving to visit friends in Az, I have to have a passport.
For flying, all that is needed is a passport card or a Real ID approved document.
“Show me your papers” is just around the corner....
So no only the clerk but her supervisors and their managers are all stupid. These are the people that control your lives.....................................
During my days booking bands, I remember when a new, green band from rural Louisiana asked their agent if they needed passports to go to New Mexico!

One of these stories happens every year or so.
Being a NM native, yes, they are true.
How do you speak english so well is one I have heard a bit.
Some people just can’t name all 75 states. It happens. 57? Something like that :P

Not only that, people believe New Mexico is a desert. Flat as a pancake.
The old Soviet Union had domestic passports that were required for internal travel.
With the RealID requirements, we're not that far from the same thing here for domestic air travel.
I would assume that's because you have to go through British Columbia. Which I find suspicious, because to the best of my knowledge it's neither British nor Columbia.

That has been going on for years. When my dad got transferred to ABQ in ‘63 from London, some of my friends were concerned for our saftety what with the rampaging injuns and gun totin’ cowboys everywhere. And it’s still a SMDH situation. Beautiful state. Horrid politics. Of course Calvada is now in the same boat. Beautiful state, horrid politics. At least no state income tax here. Yet.
One of Bart Simpson’s best lines was “You mean there’s a “new” Mexico???”
Those children haven’t made it to government civil service yet.
But when they do, we are doomed.................
