DARPA Is Building a $10 Million, Open Source, Secure Voting System

For years security professionals and election integrity activists have been pushing voting machine vendors to build more secure and verifiable election systems, so voters and candidates can be assured election outcomes haven’t been manipulated.

Now they might finally get this thanks to a new $10 million contract the Defense Department’s Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) has launched to design and build a secure voting system that it hopes will be impervious to hacking.

The first-of-its-kind system will be designed by an Oregon-based firm called Galois, a longtime government contractor with experience in designing secure and verifiable systems. The system will use fully open source voting software, instead of the closed, proprietary software currently used in the vast majority of voting machines, which no one outside of voting machine testing labs can examine. More importantly, it will be built on secure open source hardware, made from special secure designs and techniques developed over the last year as part of a special program at DARPA. The voting system will also be designed to create fully verifiable and transparent results so that voters don’t have to blindly trust that the machines and election officials delivered correct results.

But DARPA and Galois won’t be asking people to blindly trust that their voting systems are secure—as voting machine vendors currently do. Instead they’ll be publishing source code for the software online and bring prototypes of the systems to the Def Con Voting Village this summer and next, so that hackers and researchers will be able to freely examine the systems themselves and conduct penetration tests to gauge their security. They’ll also be working with a number of university teams over the next year to have them examine the systems in formal test environments.

Those that count the votes can manage all the parameters you mention to achieve the desired outcome.

I’d rather they register your eye scan. Pass it as a citizen, go vote. Fail it as a non-citizen or a multiple time voter, blinded immediately.

I agree with other posts and will add that ten million is way too much for the project.

DARPA being tied to the bureaucracy, has a dog in this fight and I wouldn’t trust any DARPA voting system any more than I trust the vote counters in Broward County.

Doesn’t matter how secure the voting is - it matters who counts the votes.

If the day ever comes that they can't pad the vote, they can delete votes. I'm more worried about votes being deleted, especially in areas with insanely low turnouts.

Two cybersecurity experts who hacked into the last NSW election voting system have raised security concerns about next month’s poll.

In 2015, Professor Teague and her Melbourne University colleague Chris Culnane exposed a major security hole in the online voting platform that could have allowed hackers to manipulate the votes without users knowing.

After alerting government agencies to the potential breach, the security concern was resolved.

But Dr Culnane says there are still too many risks and uncontrollable factors in any online voting project.

“Whilst convenience [of voting] is definitely an attribute we should strive towards, it shouldn’t be the primary attribute. The primary one should be the security and verifiability of that vote,” he said.

In a paper count, if the papers are looked after, you can always go back in the case of a dispute and check whether there has been an error or not,” she said.

Look up the political contributions for Galois for 2016. They all went to crazy Bernie.

This is the sensible criticism and research on their schemes, not some new-Luddite retreat to techniques that cheating Dims exploit today.

Fact is a Votor ID and.a peer-reviewed (open) system could give all the advantages of the ink finger and paper and more, allowing us to see that our vote was accurately counted and fraud stopped.

DARPA and these social engineers, however, are working on a way to fleece us forever, and following the money is how it’s uncovered.

Democrats have been cheating since Tamany Hall... paper ballots did not deter them. They just used population-replacement, targeted immigration, and lawfare to legalize the methodology or to make sure there was no remedy when fraud, even obvious fraud, comes to light so that fraudulent ballots still get counted.
