Two-thirds of Republicans support 'red flag' gun laws: Poll

More than two-thirds of Republican-leaning adults say in a new poll that they support so-called red flag laws that allow family members to petition a court for temporary restrictions on a person's right to own a firearm.

A poll released Tuesday found that 70 percent of Republicans surveyed support such legislation, as do 67 percent of gun owners.

Support for such legislation drops, however, when it is expanded to allow members of law enforcement to petition a court without a family member filing a claim.

In that case, 66 percent of Republicans support allowing police officers to petition a court to take away a citizen's firearms, while 60 percent of gun owners said the same. Nearly 80 percent of Democrats support red flag laws that extend to law enforcement, while 85 percent of Democrats support the basic version of the laws.

In all, 77 percent of the public supports family-initiated orders, while 70 percent back police-initiated ones, according to the poll.

Support for the legislation was polled just before two deadly mass shootings in El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio, which thrust gun control back into the national spotlight. President Trump reportedly supports the idea of passing red flag legislation at the national level, which Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) vowed to do in a bill with the president's backing earlier this month.

Graham's legislation would create a federal grant program for law enforcement to help states pass their own red flag laws.

“These grants will be given to law enforcement so they can hire and consult with mental health professionals to better determine which cases need to be acted upon. This grant program also requires robust due process and judicial review. It does allow for quick action," Graham said in a statement.

APM Research's survey contacted 1,000 American adults between July 16 and 21. The poll's margin of error is 3.5 percentage points.

Men and women who truly appreciate liberty, and our natural, God-given rights, are becoming a dying breed. We can thank the gov't school system and we can blame our church pulpits.

These people better hope their family relationships are always rock solid, with no arguments or bitter moments. They are playing with fire by supporting this.

And our selves. That is the part that hurts. That is the part that gets me in trouble when I tell people “ We have no one to blame but ourselves”.

More laws to be broken by those WDGAS. It will do as much as the anti drug laws stop drugs. It will look good in print, but the Crazies, Crusaders and Criminals will still find ways.

70% of Republicans are not familiar with the Constitution or the Declaration and think that rights come from the government.

This was no doubt a very carefully worded poll designed to get a certain result.

Most ‘Pubbies have a quaint and charming belief in the rule of law and due process.
Realists understand that government agencies have been weaponized and not to be trusted, period.

it’s a calculated risk - some feel they are playing with fire as it is...

Sort of like 95% of gun owners favor intergalactic background checks on any and all firearm transfers. Right? Uh, BS!

The concept is actually a fair idea.

It’s just that it would be abused and misused against ex-husbands, people that were not liked, and political enemies of the state.

Witness how Google tried to SWAT the engineer who is a whistle blower.

No, it’s not a fair idea at all.

Red Flag laws are a solution to Freedom.

It’s OK, a majority of the American sheeple, even some here, supported the Patriot Act too. I heard nary a whimper when the (R)N(C) created TSA/NSA.

Our Const. Republic died MOONS ago.

So 2/3 of Republican voters are clueless; who would have guessed? Even I thought it was only 40 to 50 percent, but 67?

Martha Mcallum of Fox News had some “FBI Expert” on recently, who could have come right out of the KGB Academy.

He was full on Deep State, and all-in for the need for Fed.gov to implement “Red Flag Laws” and full of cliches about “domestic terrorism” and fear-mongering.

One more generation and the transformation/destruction of American culture will be complete.

If we had this ‘red flag’ law in place, men like Chris Cuomo should not be allowed to own a gun.

Or they don’t want their daughters and sons slaughtered at school or walmart by a nut job who should never have a gun, and in previous times would be institutionalized, but today walk free.

The “Liberty” argument is why these dangerous people are walking free... Not only that, but those same “liberty” arguments, are why these dangerous kids are in mainstream schools as well.

Since the mental health policy of the US is an abject joke, you cannot pretend that society does not need to have different checks to protect itself.

Do red flag laws risk abuse? Certainly, just like PFA and other things do, but does that mean they are unacceptable?

“A poll released Tuesday found that 70 percent of Republicans surveyed support such legislation, as do 67 percent of gun owners.”

Completely made up poll. This poll is nonsense, don’t believe it. There is a huge effort to get the President to sign any gun control law especially red flag laws. Gun control is 100 percent certain defeat for trump in 2020.
