Trouble with this storm is that it is so powerful it will bring down some brick and mortar buildings if it makes landfall. And a storm of this magnitude sometimes takes on a life of it’s own and defies all expected forecasting.

Very true.

Hope Town is about 20 feet off the water at most. That lighthouse is pretty rickety too, so it may not withstand 180mph winds. The island is also fairly small, but it is surrounded by waters that are just 8 feet deep on average. At low tide the waters can be just 4-6 feet deep for miles out.

...and defies all expected forecasting.

Exactly. Once it reaches a certain size, it makes other weather systems somewhat irrelevant.

Oh definitely. The root of the problem is lack of significant data. Bastardi gets close by taking the historical record and using it as a template. But even knowing everything going on within Dorian would take about a million Dorothy 1’s. Movie reference.

:( Very sad.Twitter More Ridiculous. Just an FYI, the "early turn" models had this headed for the north eastern bend in Abaco, not plowing west across it with a slight latitude loss upon approach (which could be via interactive disruption).

Ridiculous.

For anyone wondering, slight latitude loss (drift South) may be bad news looking ahead to FL and US interests.

Jim Cantore ✔ @JimCantore We now have hurricane and storm surge watches up for the Treasure and Space coast. With such an slow and incredible turn forecast over the next 48 hours & with TS winds out 140 miles from the center and hurricane winds out 45 miles from center Florida must prepare for the worst.
