They always cite the storm surge height rather than storm surge height + wave height. People near the water face the storm surge + wave height. They think 15’ surge means they only need to be at 15’ elevation. They find out about the large waves in the surge a bit late.
I agree. This thread is no place for technical quibbling. Many folks living in FL rely on NN as an efficient source of information. Wading through posturing is an unnecessary distraction.
NN was a great help during Irma.

...CATASTROPHIC CATEGORY 5 DORIAN CONTINUES TO BATTER THE ABACOS...
This is a life-threatening situation. Residents in the Abacos
should continue to stay in their shelter as the eastern eyewall of
Dorian is over the area.
Hazards:
- Wind Gusts over 220 mph
- Storm Surge 18 to 23 feet above normal tide levels with higher
destructive waves
These hazards will cause extreme destruction in the affected areas
and will continue for several hours.

There is one noodle that concerns me.

The slower forward speed is probably a good sign for FL escaping the worst, don’t think there can be anything much better than moderate impacts from Palm Beach north now, but the eventual northward turn is more likely the slower Dorian goes now. Also noting that surface winds have shifted to a northerly direction in most parts of FL today. That is also consistent with the forecast scenario. Continued east to northeast winds would not be as good an omen for FL.
If it’s moving at 5 mph - or stalls out - does that put the direction up for grabs?
