By all means, let’s keep the Plantations open

At least on the Plantations they had to WORK to get fed.

Glad I covered myself—as President Trump might say it was a perfect post. Sort of.

I do feel sorry for the truly disabled, including people who have chronic fatigue as you said.

Before I diagnosed myself on my own and took two years to convince the MD she should treat me for hypothyroidism, I had bad fatigue, brain fog , hot flashes and muscle and joint pains. The MD is one who agrees to treat only if she is covered for malpractice by what I call a “sports score”-—a proven blood test result scoring at a number to show thyroid too low—as I already diagnosed for 2 years! The Rx took away some symptoms.

I struggled mightily to work to my age 71 retirement with that brain fog and fatigue. No disability, of course.

These are the people who seem to have plenty of cash for medical marijuana.

Cannot comment because any hint of discussion of marijuana here causes intense controversy. Including from several people I really respect here.

I'm sorry but I'm not prepared to make a joint statement with you.

My mother was a social worker, and it gave me a look at the welfare system. These people are at least able bodied enough to plunge fries into hot oil.

“The new rule...will allow states to waive the work requirement only in areas where the unemployment rate is above 7 percent.”

And that leads to a SOLUTION for the Blue States. Simply raise their Minimum Wage to $25/hour, so that their unemployment rate hits 10% (at the least), and they can have all the handouts they want.

President Trump has done the job of making full employment a reality. There’s no reason why an able bodied adult without dependents can’t work.

In many/most cases, food stamps hurt the beneficiaries.

Food stamps rob the peeps of their good instincts to work and be productive and have a sense of self-worth and set good examples for their kids.

Food stamps feed into the worst instincts of lassitude and "gimmie free stuff".

I’m all for this.

I volunteer as an intake interviewer at a local food bank. As such I encounter these food stamp (they’re trying to change the name to SNAP, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, but they’re not having much luck around here) folks all the time.
______

Me: Are you working?

Client: I get a government check.

Me: Thank you, are you working? (It’s possible to work and get a gvt check.)

Client: No.

Me: How much money do you spend at the grocery store?

Client: I get food stamps.

Me: Thank you. I see from your paperwork that you get food stamps. How much?

Client: Well, I was getting $300. But Jamel moved out and applied for food stamps on his own. They cut me down to $230.

Me: Not counting the $230 in food stamps, how much are you spending at the grocery store?

Client: I told you I get food stamps.

Me: Yes you did but food stamps won’t buy everything you need. Toilet paper, deodorant and shampoo for example.

Client: I don’t buy that stuff at the grocery store.

Me: Okay, but where ever you buy it, how much are you spending?

Client: $50.00 I guess.
______

This pretty well sums up the food stamp part of the interview. Sometimes it’s like pulling teeth with these folks. They know I’m going to ask these questions, they’re in here every six weeks. I think they enjoy busting my chops.

“The statute and the USDA’s prior regulations recognize that States are in the best position to evaluate local economic circumstances and to determine where there are insufficient job opportunities such that work requirements would be ineffective....” the state and local government officials argue in the lawsuit.

They are correct. And those same States are in the best position TO SPEND MONEY ON SHIT THE FEDGOV IS NOT CONSTITUTIONALLY ALLOWED TO SPEND IT ON.

Yeah that brain fog is terrible- very hard to deal with- the fatigue is no picnic either i can imagine- my friend just looks awful some days- They explain it like having the flu constantly, and some days it even looks like they have the flu- they just look like something the cat dragged in- so i can imagine how hard it would be to try to work with symptoms like that-

Let the FED drop it and let the states ‘handle’ it.

Same as the illegal situation.

Let the States/cities pay for it.

As long as people in New Mexico and Idaho etc are helping to pay for NY welfare etal not a problem for NYers.

When the states/cities have to raise taxes to cover their own freebies, the voters should be able to take care of it.

Real problem is have taxes ever been ‘downgraded’ once a program is over? Redundant, I know...

Very insightful comments, thanks. Yes, mow the front lawn in shorts and T-shirt —lookin’ good— then take five days to recover...out of sight. I know it well. Mow the back yard the next week. No, I’m not on disability: couldn’t work enough hours over my career to qualify.

you should be able to get disability- but you’ll only get minimum, which i think is around $700 a month or so because you didn’t get enough weeks in at high enough wage- that’s what they give to folks that are either disabled and have never worked, or those that work only a short time and get disabled on the job like from accident or disease or whatever
