Sessions to face Tuberville in Alabama GOP Senate runoff

Former Attorney General Jeff Sessions advanced to the Republican runoff in his bid to regain his old Senate seat in Alabama.

Sessions will face off against former Auburn football coach Tommy Tuberville in the March 31 runoff after no Republican candidate earned more than 50 percent of the vote in Tuesday's primary, according to The Associated Press.

Despite Sessions holding the Senate seat for 20 years, the GOP primary race remained close as results came in Tuesday night, with Tuberville and Sessions rotating in and out of first place.

The tight vote count underscores that Sessions could face a tough four-week slog as he tries to lock down the nomination.

Sessions has the backing of fellow Alabama Sen. Richard Shelby, but other top Republicans, including Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (Ky.), have stayed out of the primary. Sessions was ousted as attorney general in 2018 after his relationship with President Trump soured because of the former senator's decision to recuse himself from the FBI investigation into Russia’s election meddling and the Trump campaign.

Trump’s relationship with Sessions has loomed over the race, but he’s largely kept his distance publicly during the Republican primary. Sessions and Tuberville, as well as Rep. Bradley Byrne (R-Ala.), who finished in third place, touted themselves during the primary as the candidate most aligned with Trump.

Tuberville, speaking to supporters on Tuesday night, referred to Sessions as a "cut and run" politician, an apparent reference to his relationship with Trump.

"We’re going to finish what President Trump started when he looked at Jeff Sessions from across the table and said, 'You’re fired,'" Tuberville added, according to multiple reports. Whoever wins the runoff election will face off against Democratic Sen. Doug Jones (D-Ala.), who is widely viewed as the most vulnerable Democratic senator.

Jones won his seat in 2017 when he beat GOP Senate nominee Roy Moore, who faced multiple accusations of sexual misconduct with teenage girls when he was in his 30s. Moore also ran again for the party's nomination this year but lost on Tuesday night.

The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC) on Tuesday night referred to both Tuberville and Sessions as "deeply flawed."

"Just like we saw last time, this runoff will extend a bitter, divisive feud while Senator Jones will continue to outraise his Republican opponents and is focused on bringing people together," DSCC spokeswoman Helen Kalla said in a statement. The Alabama Senate race is ranked by The Cook Political Report as "leans Republican."

Isn’t it interesting that as soon as the election was over, the accusers of Roy Moore just sorta disappeared?

This is what happens to someone who loyally gets appointed Attorney General of the United States & then doesn’t have the wisdom or courage to stare down & end the phony Russia Witch Hunt. Recuses himself on FIRST DAY in office, and the Mueller Scam begins! https://t.co/2jGnRgOS6h— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) March 4, 2020

Just FYI, I spend a fair amount of time on Capitol Hill and mostly with Senators and members of Congress from Alabama and Shelby told me that he’s done after this term. His most likely successor is Congressman Rob Aderholt, who’s a pretty good guy. He was among the House Republicans who crashed Schiff’s impeachment party with Nunes, Jordan, Meadows, Collins & Co.

Yep, and if they would study up on Tuberville, they wouldn’t vote for him, but hey who am I to say out of staters should tell folks how to vote?

My family and I voted for Bradley Byrne but are now Tommy supporters.

I think most of the Byrne votes will go to him. If they wanted Sessions they would have voted for him.

Latest:

2,211 of 2,281 precincts reported

Alabama Statewide Percent

Byrne, Bradley 195,450 26.76%

Moore, Roy 50,988 6.98%

Sessions, Jeff 227,492 31.15%

Tuberville, Tommy 235,461 32.24%

So if Tommy can get the majority of Byrnes votes, the Keebler Elf gores back to the hollow tree.

Just like the Herman Cain and Clarence Thomas accusers...

I hope Tuberville’s campaign has something up their sleeve for Jones, whose staff is full of young liberals.

Amazing that the old fart has that many supporters.

Amazing Tuberville has that many supporters when you know every Crimson Tide fan voted against him out of spite.

Yes you are probably correct....and that could be descriptive of any state in our present time of idiocracy in the US. I voted yesterday around 1 PM. Polling place was jammed. More than I have ever seen it for a primary. Voted for Tommy. Will vote for him in the runoff.

Turnout was light in my precinct, although it may have picked up after 3:30 p.m., when my son and I voted. NC has a long early-voting period, too.

He was actually a pretty good U.S. Senator; just an epic flop as AG.

Jeff sessions is a coward and a doche bag. Just as bad as Biden. Worked his whole life in the federal government. Turns out to be a backstabbing traitor. He is like McCain without the class and valour. Oh McCain had no class. Yeah I know
