Failure in the Virtual Classroom: A study finds that many schools barely cared if kids did any work.

The remote-learning experiment isn’t going well. This month the University of Washington’s Center on Reinventing Public Education published a report looking at how 477 school districts nationwide have responded to the Covid-19 crisis. Its findings reveal widespread neglect of students.

The report found only 27% of districts required teachers to record whether students participate in remote classes, while remote attendance has been abysmal. During the first two weeks of the shutdown, some 15,000 Los Angeles students failed to show up for classes or do any schoolwork.

The Philadelphia Inquirer reported that, 10 weeks in, “the Philadelphia School District registers just 61% of students attending school on an average day.” The same week the Boston Globe reported that only “half of students are logging into online class or submitting assignments online on a typical day.”

Students have an incentive to ditch digital class, since their work counts for little or nothing. Only 57.9% of school districts do any progress monitoring, the report found. The rest haven’t even set the minimal expectation that teachers review or keep track of the work their students turn in. Homework counts toward students’ final grades in 42% of districts. And some schools that do grade offer students a pass/incomplete.

Teachers unions never want teachers’ performance judged by student achievement, so they’ve lobbied to ensure a lack of accountability and assessment during the shutdowns. They dressed up this demand in the language of social justice: Because the pandemic has not visited the same hardships on all families, the only equitable solution is to deprive all students of for-credit instruction, they claim.

Of course the unions have something to do with it. If online were to work well, no need for half the teachers and administrators. Unions are protecting their turf, their monopoly. Grandson tried the online offered by the local public school, it was a shambles. So he went over to one of the approved homeschool network on line curricula and loves it. He’s never returning to the crappy public school and taxpayers are contemplating demanding school tax refunds.

They don’t care if they work when they are IN school.

My kids did much better at home.

I have two granddaughters in high school. One worked her butt off completing assignments. The other did nothing, nada, zilch. She should have gotten an 'F", but her final grade is now a "C". When I spoke to the school I was informed that the teachers were pissed but the school board decided every child would get a passing grade.

Was just going to ask how is this different from when they’re IN the classroom?

Of course, just one big vacation for teachers.

Another screaming reason why homeschooling or private school is the way to go.

The social justice crowd immediately claimed the missing students are poor and unable to afford computers or internet connections.

Fedex the kids a book and have them mail back a book report.

Who needs schooling anyways, especially “forced” schooling. Just award every black baby that’s not aborted, a combination “fill in the blank” birth certificate and a “fill in the blank” Doctor’s degree to get them started off right.

When they get old enough to want some Air Jordan’s, or wants to score some koke, or get some drive-by bang bangs, then they can decide what kind of Doctor degree theys be needing, and have somebody (that can write) write it in the blank. Then, the gubments can start sending research money to them.

It is almost as if the most important - maybe the only truly important - factor in education is the student himself and his level of effort.

I heard a bit of a different story yesterday by my step-daughter, a middle school teacher and mother herself.

She said all teachers that are trying to hold online classes are told they must strictly stick to each subject for no more than 30 minutes, 3 days per week (as the administration is finding that it is “stressing most students out to be focused on more than that) and that much of what she and other teachers are doing is really assigning the students some read and answer questions, like an “open book” quiz three days per week!

She said her students aren’t really learning anything, that “everyone” understands the students aren’t going to but that “others are demanding some teaching is going on for the teachers (but especially those at the top) to be paid!”

I am being told it has to do with “close reading”.

“others are demanding some teaching is going on for the teachers (but especially those at the top) to be paid!”

I think is very true. I don't think the focus now is on the kids. Who cares about them? The focus is on teachers "checking a box" as evidence that they are currently "teaching" and that therefore the paychecks should keep coming. And the Administrators are doing the equivalent, holding "meetings" and "sending emails". It's mostly for show.

My youngest son’s teachers were just like they are in school. Nag nag nag nag nag. Hahaha. But really. They went above what was required of them and took the time to teach and help when a student was struggling. They were forced to give work that had already been covered because students who had no internet access were given hard copies of the work that other students were doing online. The writing teacher walked all 120 students through an argumentative essay. They had to do all the steps of outlining, rough draft, etc. When it was time to make the final copy, she called each student and went through their papers line by line, teaching as she went. My son would have whined and stomped and thrown things if I had tried to do such with him. But he was all sweet and “yes, ma’am” this and “yes, ma’am” that to her. This particular teacher is exceptional as are all of my son’s teachers from this past year.

My next son up had rotten teachers this year except for his band director. They stayed rotten during the lockdown. My high schooler had a very easy semester, and only one of her teachers made an effort to keep up with students. She (the teacher) did the best she could with what was allowed.

You’ve got it, as I did but I’m not sure she has - yet. After all, she’s lived as a teacher and parent in the days of “participation trophy’s!”

Friend in New Jersey had a teacher state that grades were inflated right now. His daughter wanted an honors class next year but the teacher stated that she wasn’t really ready and that the grades she’s been getting were inflated.

I’m pretty sure this is all about money and indoctrination. They don’t want kids at home with their parents learning from them. It proves how useless public schools are.

The rationale has been that poorer kids don’t have the right tech and quiet space to participate, so they can’t make anyone participate — or expect them to complete the work or meet any standards for grades.

Very convenient, of course. Part of that also comes from not moving the courses fully online with only asynchronous participation and requirements.
