COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) - Authorities have arrested a man wanted in Minnesota for the murder of a woman and her child who traveled to South Carolina to kill his ex-girlfriend.
Richland County deputies received a call on Sunday from the Rochester Police Department in Minnesota who notified RCSD about 29-year-old Renard Carter who traveled to Columbia to kill a woman he previously dated.
According to authorities in Rochester, Carter previously killed his pregnant girlfriend and her 2-year-old daughter.
Officials with RCSD located Carters ex-girlfriend and placed her in a safe house.
Carter was located in a room at the Aloft Hotel located on Lanneau Court on Sunday night. An arrest team went to apprehend Carter, but he made threats to shoot officers while inside the hotel room. Authorities tried to negotiate with Carter to get him out of the room, but Carter refused to cooperate and told officers he had a rifle.
Lott noted that Carter was broadcasting on Facebook Live during the incident. Lott said the department has that footage as well as body camera footage as well as part of the investigation.
Ive seen at least one bodycam and, pretty much, pretty clear on the shooting, Lott said.
Lott said around 10:10 p.m., Carter came out of the room with the weapon in his hand. Carter was shot by two Lexington County deputies and a SLED agent before he was arrested.
Following the shooting, officers seized Carters weapon, which was a BB gun that looked like a rifle.
Carter was taken to a nearby hospital to be treated for his injuries. Lott said Carter is being guarded at the hospital and will be transported to Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center once he is released. Carter will be extradited to Minnesota at a later date.
This was a joint effort by all four agencies to locate him and arrest him for the crimes he committed in Minnesota, Lott said. Unfortunately, he chose not to go peacefully.
At this point, Lott said Carter will not face charges in Richland County. However, he is facing murder charges filed by the Rochester Police Department.
Lott said there were about 15 officers from RCSD, the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division, the Lexington County Sheriffs Department, and the Columbia Police Department were all involved at the scene.
Were very fortunate that none of the officers were injured and that he was apprehended, Lott said.
After the investigation ends, Lott said the report will be submitted to the Lexington County Solicitor for review to provide a ruling on if the shooting was justified.
How long before they indict the officers who shot him?
Was he charged with dangling a participle?

Why would the woman and her child travel to South Carolina to kill the mans ex-girlfriend? Or was it the child alone who travelled to South Carolina to kill the mans ex-girlfriend? Or did the mother and/or child travel to South Carolina to kill the childs ex-girlfriend? Im confused.
Rochester, MN was a nice safe town until the drug trade showed from Chicago about 10 years ago.
I hope they were nice and kind to this murderer when they arrested him . wouldnt want Lebron or AOC thinking police were hassling poor, innocent black men .
I used to work on Harbison Blvd. It has grown up a lot since then.
It is South Carolina and I have hopes that the answer is NEVER but BLM is active and one is now left bereft of certainties.
Yeah, only when it is a black criminal shot while resisting or attacking the police.
See, what had happened wuz ... getting food for my babez ... some dudes ... preaching the word of Jesus ... going back to school ... aspiring rapper ... I dindu nuffin.
AGREED but most of the news comes to us without the benefit of proof-readers or copy editors. WIS is a local TV/Radio in Columbia, SC, which is Richland County. Probably this is written by a USC Journalism grad/student. At least it is English ... ?
The weird thing is that he might actually get a greater punishment in South Carolina for resisting arrest in this manner than in Minnesota for committing an actual double homicide.
Lol...no but the writer is guilty of grammar felony
It is confusing.
He murdered the mother and child in MN, and was inSC wanting to kill an ex.
Riots at 11.
Too bad they didn’t kill him. If he gets out he will kill agaiin.
No remorse, pity, or emotion in those dead eyes.
Meanwhile, two innocent females are dead. Rest their souls, O Lord.
LOL
