Democrats’ successive losses over the past two legislative cycles have all but obliterated the party’s hold over the Jersey Shore.
Starting on Jan. 11, only one Democrat, Sen. Vin Gopal, will represent the coastal region south of Sayreville in the Legislature, and even he finds himself on a precarious perch amid Republican enthusiasm that could further imperil Gopal, a former Monmouth County Democratic chairman whose running mates lost re-election on Nov. 2.
“The party itself has to look a lot and see how they’re doing things differently. A win is a win, but Democrats should not be celebrating,” Gopal told the New Jersey Monitor.
Since 2019, Democrats have lost numerous Shore districts. Sen. Michael Testa (R-Cumberland) ousted former Sen. Bob Andrzejczak (D-Cape May) in the 1st District that year, with the Republican’s running mates taking the district’s two Assembly seats.
This year, the party lost another four Assembly seats in Atlantic and Monmouth counties and also failed to claim a state Senate seat in the 2nd District, which was left vacant by Republican Sen. Chris Brown’s July resignation (the seat had been controlled by Democrats for a decade prior to Brown winning it in 2007).
Every political corner has its own explanation for the defeats, but one thing is clear: Progressivism is not playing along the Shore.
“When Democrats are perceived as more generically Democrat, or when the party — statewide or nationwide — is perceived as more liberal or less in line with the center-right politics of those counties, that’s where the counties are going to revert to their means,” said Micah Rasmussen, director of Rider University’s Rebovich Institute for New Jersey Politics. “They’re going to revert to their traditional Republican leanings.”

I wonder if some day the conservative areas will break away from the lefty areas. Not sure how this would work, but it would be interesting.
Living in a beach town in a red county is the main reason I am still in NJ.
Monmouth and Ocean counties should be their own State.
that movement has been discussed for decades, but the blue northern counties are far more populated and won’t allow it.

Many say that we don’t have adequate representation in congress, because each district has become too large. How about smaller congressional districts and more than 50 states? Well, I can dream...
Lot’s of over 55 retirement communities in Central and South NJ and taxes although not actually low compared to many other States are low for NJ. Many seniors from the State who choose to stay will move to the southern part of the State where homes as well as taxes are lower. Those older folks tend to be Conservative.
They had an old show on Nickelodeon called “the Adventures of Pete and Pete,” which was filmed completely in South Orange, and in the 90’s that area of NJ looked idyllic.
This MUST be due to all the GOP gerrymandering in NEW JERSEY— oh, wait . . .
Some are forecasting as many as 100 seats turned in 2022.
Many moons ago Southern Jersey was talking about breaking themselves away from North Jersey so it is not impossible.
So much of the state is really nice, in contrast to popular opinion of those who haven’t been through there.
South Jersey is indeed very nice. Years ago I used to do a ton of cycling there on Sundays with a bike group.
The most pleasant parts of Maryland are the Eastern Shore and the Panhandle, for much the same reason.
Electoral fumigation! Now if they can just adjust the formulation to fumigate RINOs too, we’ll be in business.

It’s already happening, but its a cultural split, not a political one. If you would like some big picture evidence of it go ahead price houses in Idaho or U-hauls heading to Texas. The cultural split will find its own equilibrium.
This is contrasted with political secession which is at best a fool’s errand. And at worst outright treason. In any case, the politicians are not going to allow a political split in the foreseeable future, even at the cost of thousands of lives.
