Queen Elizabeth announces she wants Camilla to be named Queen Consort when Charles becomes king

Queen Elizabeth II's jubilee message includes a request that her daughter-in-law, Camilla, be named Queen Consort when Prince Charles ascends to the throne.

"And when, in the fullness of time, my son Charles becomes King, I know you will give him and his wife Camilla the same support that you have given me; and it is my sincere wish that, when that time comes, Camilla will be known as Queen Consort as she continues her own loyal service," the queen said in a message released Saturday night, hours before she marks 70 years on the British throne.

A spokesman for Charles and Camilla said the Prince of Wales will be issuing a statement of congratulation to the Queen on Sunday, Accession Day. "He and the Duchess of Cornwall are touched and honored by Her Majesty's words," a spokesman said.

The 1,000-year tradition dictates that the king's wife becomes a queen as a Queen Consort, which has no constitutional authority, according to BBC News. But when Prince Charles and Camilla married in 2005, Clarence House said Camilla's title would be "Princess Consort" when Charles becomes king.

It was believed the move was made out of respect for Charles' first wife, Diana. In a historic move, Charles and Diana were allowed to divorce in 1992, and then she died in a car accident in August 1997.

Camilla, who is also divorced from her first husband, was given the title Duchess of Cornwall when she and Charles married, since Diana had been styled as Diana, Princess of Wales.

Charles and Camilla, who first dated in the 1970s before they were married, had carried on a long affair before he and Diana divorced, and Camilla was blamed by the British public for their divorce.

He had an exchange of views with Camilla a while ago. Perhaps you heard of it. :)

How the Brits decide their royal succession is none of our business, and that has been my concern in this thread.

I’m perfectly happy to leave that up to their Queen. She’s seen a whole lot more than either you or I have - from the inside! ‘ and she knows what she’s doing.

we don’t have any say in what the Brits decide about the succession to their own throne.

No one posted such a comment, we have little say in any countries chosen path. But they did give opinions. You simply like causing an uproar.

Have a nice evening.

I don’t believe we actually saw what was critically severed (or crushed, etc.) in the tunnel crash.

Charles should have insisted. This is why he isn’t king material. Instead he made Diana crazy*, scarred his children forever and generally created all the scandals his bad advisors thought they would avoid.

*not for one minute do I believe a 19 yr old virgin was also a jaded golddigger who knew what she was getting into.

But old prince Charles wants to be Camillas tampon. King and queen consort worthy right there. 🙌 👑🇬🇧

Victoria and Albert were a famous love match-several books written about that one-I can see where Phillip’s political family connections would have not been desirable at that time in history, either-it would suck to be a British royal-even now...

I agree with that. They have no power and they're being invaded. Maybe Harry was the smart one, he fled. But mostly he's as smart as a fence post. :-)

Well, you are the one making much ado, about nothing.

Have a good evening.

Plenty of people here have expressed their opinions of the Queen’s expression of her desire in this issue.

If I had seen on this thread something other than second- or third-hand gossip (and a few moralistic opinions as to how other people should live their lives) I might have left it alone. But everyone here just seems to want to express their criticism and spite. I haven’t seem much real concern for the UK.

Yes, I do enjoy making people think. I see it as a fun computer game.

Perhaps I’m the green guy in this video:

I’m not sure what you mean.

But if it’s what I think, things happen when people get old. I wouldn’t criticize anyone for that - I’ve taken care of a lot of very good, very old people.

But when they’re elected leaders of MY nation, I do worry about their intellectual and philosophical substance.

Diana is the daughter of an Earl. She is a Spencer; as in Spencer-Churchill. High aristocrats and more English than the mostly German royal family of Elizabeth !!. The Spencers are effectively royalty themselves. Get a clue

I said “if it is accurate”. And I understand that lots of people, including lots of conservatives, are enamored of royalty. That’s just not me. The British royal family is an expensive trinket.

The above comment is in reply to a comment of Diana being the ‘bulimic’ and more or less on the same order as Camilla which is outrageous. Come on now. Diana’s ancestral home (Althorp) houses the greatest collection of privately owned art in Britain. She and her siblings are very wealthy heirs who don’t need the Windsor money.

Well, if it isn’t your own ‘expensive trinket’, I guess you aren’t worried.

I’ve heard all of my long life calls for the British monarchy to be abolished, and I’ve yet to see it happen. The people who DO pay for it seem to still want it.

This needs clarification because Camilla will not rule as a Queen.
Queen Elizabeth is Queen Regnant, a female monarch equivalent in rank and title to a king, who reigns in her own right.   A Queen Consort is the wife of a reigning king.
They are not the same.

Yep..... I think a Queen Consort is technically a queen but has no official power in that she could not become the monarch should the king die.
