WASHINGTON — In normal times, a politician could hardly do something less controversial than pose for a photo with kids. But these are not normal times.
Stacey Abrams, the Georgia Democrat making her second run for governor, faced intense blowback Monday after sharing — and then quickly deleting — a photo of her smiling unmasked face surrounded by masked elementary school children.
Abrams visited a Decatur elementary school to promote reading and Black History Month. But not since George W. Bush continued reading "The Pet Goat" to Florida students on Sept. 11, 2001, has such a benign event turned into such a political blunder.
Abrams, who supports school mask mandates, was immediately accused of hypocritically violating the school's mask policy and pilloried by Republican politicians and conservative media outlets.
Democrats say the controversy is much ado about nothing, noting that Abrams wore a mask to the school and removed it only for the photo and a speech.
But the photo touched a nerve, Republicans say, because it displays the out-of-touch piety that they say leads liberals to impose onerous societal norms without feeling obligated to always follow them themselves.

We need to be unmasked everywhere. At my doctors office, when I checked in for my appointment a few weeks ago, behind plexiglass and masked, both the receptionist and I had to pull our masks down to figure out what the other was saying. Things are so muffled.
It’s even worse for the students. I feel for them.
What most boomers don’t get:
It’s not hypocrisy, it’s hierarchy. Calling out their hypocrisy every day isn’t making anyone step down in embarrassment. They are better than you.
The irony is the person mst likely to get extremely ill is Stacy Abrams, if anyone should be wearing a mask it is her.
I don’t care what Abrams says. However, I highly encourage to put a face diaper on her butt ugly gap-toothed face. I don’t want to see it.
Were her body guards, who helped her get down and get back up wearing masks?
And were they armed?
I get ill looking at that waddling comorbidity.

Looks like she’s one triple meat chili cheese burger away from a heart attack.
Everyone’s got it wrong. She was actually reading “Eustacia the Happy Blue Walrus” to them, in costume, and briefly needed to remove her mask to put on her tusks.
She heard that it’s OK to remove the mask when eating, something she apparently does continuously.
