DeSantis digs in on redistricting fight against fellow Republicans
NBC News ^ | 14 Feb 22 | Jane C. Timm

Republicans in the Florida House and Senate have proposed a map that would largely preserve the political status quo, while DeSantis wants to boost prospects for congressional Republicans.

Gov. Ron DeSantis is barreling toward an unusual showdown with Florida Republicans in a redistricting fight that centers on a largely Black congressional district.

Despite controlling both the Legislature and the Governor’s Mansion, Republicans are at odds over how Florida’s 28 congressional districts should look over the next decade. The intra-party debate is focused on the 5th Congressional District — which is about 46 percent Black — which DeSantis wants to divide up into several GOP-leaning districts instead of one favoring Democrats.

“There’s a major difference, disagreement, between the governor and the Legislature and on [the 5th District], and so that’s going to be a huge stumbling block moving forward,” said Michael McDonald, a political science professor at the University of Florida. “And there’s a lot of pressure on DeSantis to show that he’s a true Republican looking out for national Republican interests.”

The battle lines were drawn last month when DeSantis, who is seeking re-election this year and is widely thought to be considering a 2024 run for president, injected himself into redistricting plans. He took the unorthodox step of proposing his own map even though state Senate Republicans had already released one that would essentially preserve the balance of political power, with 16 Republican-leaning and 12 Democratic-leaning congressional seats.

DeSantis’ map would add two more seats to the GOP column and subtract two from Democrats, according to the Princeton Gerrymandering Project, which gave the map an “F” in its redistricting report card. The state Senate map, meanwhile, earned a “B.”

Meanwhile, the democrats gerrymander every district they hold. Not a single district they hold isn’t gerrymandered.

They get it, but they don’t give a damn. They are Democrats at heart. They do not care about the United Stated. They just want to collect their graft money. They consider you a fool and if you vote for them, you are.

DeSantis trying to save the Florida Republican Party from themselves. What is it about Republican DNA that causes them to go Kamikaze when instead of standing up to the left?

Florida should have 20 republican districts to just 8 for the left. But the idiot RINO working as the Senate president, who singlehandedly killed Constitutional carry in the state, is doing everything he can to help the left. Joe Gruters suffers from t his same disease from time to time and I think he's fighting DeSantis on this one as well. Beginning to think we would have been much better off with Steve Vernon.

It was just what came up for Florida 5th Congressional District when I searched. Might not be the latest, but it was once correct, I’d expect. My point is that many created districts for the sake of “minority” are nothing but contortions of distance, shape, geography and solely based on black residences.

Georgia once had a district for Cynthia McKinney that reduced down to a LINE down the middle of a road for miles until it got to another black residence enclave.

I fully expect one day that Democrats will demand that large cities be given statehood (and two Senators).

The Dem Governors are doing this in their states, give credit to DeSantis for not assisting Dems like the rest of the GOPe.

The Democrats went all the way to gerrymander their states.
CA, Il, NY, NM and others. They are really gambling, as this is their only possible way they could hold to the house.
But, if it backfires on them, they could be really short everywhere. Imagine having Rep majority in NY or even CA???

Please, VOTE. Even if they tell you there is no chance!
There could be Rep windfall nobody could even imagine!
Veto proof congress majority, enough votes that the RHINOS do not matter?!

Not though to the newspapers that most GOP legislators fear like rabbits fear bobcats. DeSantis fears more a possible blast from Trump and the risk of hectoring from Bannon and his War Room posse.

Almost identical to 2012.

#5 & #2 are competitive. In theory.

But without a serious candidate, we lose every time. I think in 2032, CT becomes 4 safe DEM seats. 5 & 2 will expand into urban areas.

Ex-State Senator George Logan? (5)

State Rep. Mike France? (2)

Logan, France... 2 top candidates ready to do an 8 month sprint.

It takes a 2-yeat campaign to compete. If they continue, maybe they win in ‘26.

The New York State Court of Appeals, which is the highest court in the state and is composed of seven Democrat-appointed justices, ruled 4-3 that the Democrat gerrymanders of the congressional, senate and house maps violate the state constitution and that new, constitutional maps must be adopted by the trial court in consultation with a special master.

https://www.nycourts.gov/ctapps/Decisions/2022/Apr22/60opn22-Decision.pdf

So the Democrats won’t get their 22D-4R congressional map, at least not for 2022. That wipes away all of the Democrats’ national redistricting gains, and then some.
