Will Smith was asked to leave the Oscars after slapping Chris Rock, but he refused, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences said in a statement Wednesday.
"Things unfolded in a way we could not have anticipated," the statement said. "While we would like to clarify that Mr. Smith was asked to leave the ceremony and refused, we also recognize we could have handled the situation differently."
"Mr. Smith's actions at the 94th Oscars were a deeply shocking, traumatic event to witness in-person and on television. Mr. Rock, we apologize to you for what you experienced on our stage and thank you for your resilience in that moment," the statement added. "We also apologize to our nominees, guests and viewers for what transpired during what should have been a celebratory event."
The Academy also said it has initiated disciplinary proceedings against Smith for violating its code of conduct, "including inappropriate physical contact, abusive or threatening behavior, and compromising the integrity of the Academy."

“ It’s always been a degree of ribbing. Difference nowaday is it used to be funny and people used to be goid sports about it.”
Roasting is funny and healthy in the sense that we want or need to see people who are living high humbled
What rock said was not roasting. It was ugly and nasty. The way to deal with that is deal with him later not start a brawl on a stage 94 years old
The bald male celebrities can take it when they get ribbed for their hair falling out (and it never grows back, either). I guess Jada is more thin-skinned.
So, he was asked, and not removed...
Yea, okay.. Everyone knows if they had behaved as he did, they would have been physically removed, if they didn’t leave when asked, either by security or the police.
These people are just scum on every level.
Ahh, but the difference is where money changes hands. Especially when you’re willing to bet the farm.
Speaking strictly about the joke and roasting, Guys making fun of how women look is just never going to be funny.
Rock’s joke would have been funnier if he had called her G.I. Jada. A movie like that would be a good idea for her. A story in which she is an NCO similar to Louis Gossett, Jr. in “An Officer and a Gentleman.”
Yes. Many Hollywood big names moved to the sound of the guns in WWII. I doubt one would now. Sad. Sad.
I know too that my 6 uncles did. Their names were Noah, Ink, Joe, Artie, Leonard and JW. God bless em all. Ink on Saipan. Noah on a destroyer in the Solomons. Good men all!
The Academy was responsible for safety, and Chris Rock is far more likely to sue it, rather than sue the perp.
Yep, retired AF.
I think that would qualify under the “used to be funny” days. There’s long been no good humor in Hollywood. While good taste would veer anyone from health related jokes in any age, Chris’ joke was more lame than nasty and even Smith initially laughed. Tyrus from Gutfeld has given the best recap and analysis of this incident: This stems from problems within Will and his “marriage,” not the joke itself. Whatever the reason though, Smith was out-of-line in how it was handled and the Academy not much better.
....I think the REAL and HONEST reason for the attack was INNER BOILING anger of Smith because of his wife fornicating daily with some 20 year old under the same roof as he was with him probably paying for the roof.
Basically, Smith just LOST IT !!!
I think an industry wide smell is going to attach to Smith in decades to come and the result will be painful financially for him.
Bless them all. From a longline of servicemen myself from WW1 through Vietnam. You’d be hardpressed to find an actor who had not served in the 40s-60s. There was a strong sense of duty and patriotism then that is lacking in large part today.
See post #90 as to the source. Pondering if the other stuff was part of the reason Rock was an acceptable (by Smith and some Hollywood elites) recipient of somewhat misdirected rage.
I heard tyrus
Strictly speaking of the joke is what I said
Used to be funny. No.
Men making fun of women’s looks is Never has it been funny
I defy anyone to find Bob hope making fun of women’s looks
Don rickles yes. But he insulted people. He was disliked for that. It was not funny. But he was funny otherwise. Chris rock has an anger these guys didn’t have besides. His joke was in no way funny
Add to it that she has no choice in it.
Strictly speaking of the joke
Is it possible today to ask for a white sheet of plain square paper for the mail?
Or is that racist, sexist, and gender exclusive?
I had never seen a man slap another man before this Will Smith and Chris Rock encounter. Is this the new masculine way of insulting but not hurting another male? In my experience, punching is what males generally do if they are serious about defending whatever or whoever. Yesteryear’s actors would have, at the very least, made it more authentic and come off looking like a hero to their lady love and their fans. How far Hollywood has fallen from the great actors and their movies that we took for granted and graded according to talent.
“Slappy Smith was asked to leave the Oscars after slapping Chris Rock but he refused, the Academy says”
In the old days, I think a man slapping another man with his gloves was a way of challenging him to a duel.
“I demand satisfaction for that insult!”
Alec Baldwin could act as Will’s second, but he would probably end up shooting both duellists and a bystander.
I've seen much worse in bar fights, having been in several myself, and after all was said and done, everything was forgotten the next time we met........shit happens but at the grandiose awards of the culturally elite, that makes the news.........
Do you see a lot of this behavior at work? At church? Because this was a professional setting for these fools.
It wasn’t a bar. It was one of the places where you shouldn’t have to be told to behave.
