Moderate GOP Rep. Peter Meijer Trashes Dems for Bankrolling His MAGA Foe in Scathing Op-Ed: Selling Out ‘Any Pretense of Principle’ (pot, kettle)

Rep. Peter Meijer (R-MI), a moderate GOP congressman, blasted Democrats for bankrolling his Trumpian opponent, John Gibbs, ahead of Tuesday’s primaries in Michigan.

Democrats have been financially backing MAGA GOP candidates this primary cycle in order to have a better shot at beating them ahead of an expected Republican wave in November.

In Bari Weiss’ Substack outlet, Common Sense, Meijer wrote that he voted to certify Joe Biden’s electoral victory as president, while noting that Gibbs “denies the results” of that election.

“The DCCC’s ad buy was more than Gibbs raised over the entire duration of his campaign. It was also nearly 100x the support Donald Trump himself offered to Gibbs (a single $5,000 contribution from the Save America Super PAC),” he wrote. “In other words, the Democrats are not merely attempting to boost a candidate over the finish line: They are subsidizing his entire campaign.”

Meijer also blasted the Democrats’ hypocrisy in decrying former President Donald Trump and his followers as a threat to American democracy, yet are funding those far-right GOP primary candidates.

Watching this unraveling inside my party has been utterly bewildering. The only thing that has been more nauseating has been the capacity of my Democratic colleagues to sell out any pretense of principle for political expediency—at once decrying the downfall of democracy while rationalizing the use of their hard-raised dollars to prop up the supposed object of their fears.

The pain and torture that the Meijer coup plotters are going to receive hasn’t even begun yet. Think of the film Hostel or Saw. They have an idea what’s coming. Watch for this guy to try to disappear after January 21, 2023. It will not save him.

ABC panel criticizes Democrats meddling in GOP primaries: ‘Embarrassingly hypocritical’

Democrats have spent millions boosting GOP candidates they deem to be unelectable in the general election.

James Carville sees no ‘moral problem’ with Democrats supporting ‘extremist’ Republican candidates.

CNN’s John Avlon previously called the strategy both ‘cynical and hypocritical’!

“Democrats have been financially backing MAGA GOP candidates this primary cycle in order to have a better shot at beating them ahead of an expected Republican wave in November.”

In this case, this assertion smells like bullshit.

Cash on hand as of July 13, according to the FEC:

Meijer: $893,919
Gibbs: $145,415

If Gibbs’ money is coming from Democrats, those sure are some stingy leftists.

Two facts:

1. If (more likely WHEN) Gibbs defeats Meijer on Tuesday, he really better count on Democrats for further funding because the petulant spiteful RNC sure ain’t gonna come across. They would MUCH rather lose this seat than support a conservative who just slaughtered one of their pet RINOs.

2. This district was moved a few notches to the left in redistricting so now ANY Republican starts off as the underdog in a general election. Especially when the ultra-liberal Democrat in the race (who doesn’t have to spend a dime in the primary) has all the money in the world to campaign with.

The district is not so far left than a Republican can’t win, and money ALONE doesn’t always determine the outcome of a race, but when the imbalance is as massive as this one will be, it’s going to take a substantial “red” wave to pull of the upset here.

Be that as it may, I’d much rather take my chances with Gibbs than with a known gutless traitor.

That’s a far better analogy. I’m stealing it.

The Republican half of the Uniparty is conspiring with the Democrat half of the Uniparty to steal the midterm elections so the Republicans can blame President Trump when they lose.

The Republicans were in on the 2020 steal and aren't going to watch those efforts be undone in 2024.

I want to believe.

But this is Michigan. The donor class control the candidates elections, ads, media, of both parties. Sigh

Hope it proves me wrong this time.

Thank you, PermaRag, for your excellent analysis. You are the only one so far who has mentioned John Gibbs by name. I had no idea I got redistricted until a few weeks ago and won’t get to vote for Gibbs. Apparently redistricting was finalized in March 2022. I am quite certain your comments will rankle some “moderate” RINO FReepers going along to get along, looking for candidates who will keep on reaching across the Aisle that is always a One-Way Street with Dems. The fact is we have too many laws, too much onerous Govt. at a State and Federal level. No justice system to trust any more. I will no longer vote for the lesser of Evils in November. Time to reread the Declaration of Independence to see how far our sovereign Constitutional Republic has fallen.

So, if Meijer is Dr Quest, and Pence is obviously Race Bannon, who is Biden? I nominate Bandit.

A person with no principles (just worried about their own skin, which is why he voted with the Dims) complaining about a party that never has principles; the pot calling the kettle black. Did he really think the Dims cared one twit about him???

This genius is apparently shocked to find that the Democrats don’t love him just because he stabbed Trump in the back. IQ tests should be a requirement for public office.
