In the early 2000s, the city of St. Paul, Minn., cracked down on landlords who ignored rat problems, bad sanitation, poor heating, and so on. But instead of shaping up, the landlords sued the city for violating the federal Fair Housing Act. They argued that St. Paul’s insistence upon habitable homes hurt minorities by forcing the landlords to raise the rent. A federal court of appeals let the lawsuit go forward — holding that killing rats and fixing toilets could indeed violate the law if it somehow unintentionally displaced minorities.
When a similar case reached the Supreme Court, Justice Samuel Alito quipped, “Something has gone badly awry when a city can’t even make slumlords kill rats without fear of a lawsuit.” Now the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) — the federal agency that enforces the Fair Housing Act — has proposed policies that will make it even harder for cities to kill rats or do much else without the federal government’s blessing.

On February 9, 2023, HUD published in the Federal Register a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM) entitled “Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing”. The proposed rule would faithfully implement the Fair Housing Act’s statutory mandate to affirmatively further fair housing (AFFH), which directs HUD to ensure that the agency and its program participants proactively take meaningful actions to overcome patterns of segregation, promote fair housing choice, eliminate disparities in opportunities, and foster inclusive communities free from discrimination. HUD welcomes robust public comment on this proposed rule. Public comments are requested within 60 days of publication of the NPRM, by April 10, 2023. Please refer to the details outlined in the Federal Register for guidance towards submitting comments by this deadline.

This is California -level twisted logic - where cities wishing to routinely clean off the streets and sidewalks, moving the homeless off of them first, they have a “right” to return - is considered genocide. All manner of bacteria, filth and disease are on those sidewalks due to homeless using them as toilets, yet homeless advocates continually prevent this (San Francisco and Los Angeles).
All local zoning laws have been circumvented in California as well, single family lots can now have up to four units, more if near a “transit corridor.” This is to destroy suburban neighborhoods and move in more Section 8 into housing projects in “nice” neighborhoods.
If Newsom becomes president in 2028, he will implement this nation-wide. Count on it.

Government is by definition and design (- political -) and every decision made goes through a filter of how this benefits the politician and hurts his opponent, how this benefits the politicians donors and constituency.
Politics is not concerned with a long term strategic vision, morals or ethical consistency, there is no concept of ROI, proper risk management, nor do they see any customers or even need to worry about liability.
When government manages things, you end up with public schools, a Veterans Administration, US Postal Service... None known for their great customer service, innovation , fantastic value or performance.
However, people want more government because it promises them “free” things, and government is looking for ways to grow. Every department and agency is looking for ways to expand their scope in order to justify a greater budget and more manpower. It’s a way to buck responsibility as an individual or society while politicians want to show action or leadership in crisis. Behind every ambulance is a politician running, proposing a new law with his name on it, example Biden after the last school shooting (a new proposed gun regulation after a shooting is almost a liberal cliche at this point). But the right side is no better with their “war on drugs,” which has been an abject failure since 1969 when it began under Nixon.

Blaming the left for the massive government we have today simply isn’t right, since the right is ever as much to blame, only they have different areas of emphasis. One focuses on social justice and the environment, while the other has a national security and public safety fetish. Both grow the government when in power.
