Russia has warned it would be forced to take “retaliatory measures" to address what it called security threats created by Finland's membership. It had already warned that it would bolster defences along its border with NATO if the alliance deploys any additional troops or equipment to its new member.
The move is a strategic and political blow to President Vladimir Putin, who has long complained about NATO’s expansion toward Russia — though the alliance says it poses no threat to Moscow.
"The Russian Federation will be forced to take military-technical and other retaliatory measures to counter the threats to our national security arising from Finland’s accession to NATO,” the Foreign Ministry warned in a statement.
It said Finland's move marks "a fundamental change in the situation in Northern Europe, which had previously been one of the most stable regions in the world.”
Russian capacity unclear Earlier, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Tuesday that Finland’s membership reflects the alliance’s anti-Russian course and warned that Moscow will respond depending on what weapons NATO allies place there.
But Peskov also sought to play down the impact, noting that Russia has no territorial disputes with Finland.
It's not clear what additional military resources Russia could send to the Finnish border. Moscow has deployed the bulk of its most capable military units to Ukraine.

If you remember the Cuban Missile Crisis it was in part over the fact that we have medium range missiles in Italy and Turkey, which just happened to be near the border of the Iron Curtain. We have long had the policy that we can do whatever we want in Europe but no one can dare enter the western hemisphere without our approval.

If Russia did not keep invading its neighbors then maybe there would not be so much interest in joining NATO.
This is more of a provocation than Ukraine ‘threatening’ to join Nato. Does anyone not think Russia is going to take this as a direct threat to its national security? My great great Granpa was from Finland and was a guard in Czar Nicholas’s palace when Finland was a part of Russia. Whoever is running Finland does not know his/her own history.

NATO in 2004, and was on the fast track to be turned down
again.
And so, being ever so bright, they back a nation that is
responsible for the deaths of nearly 200,000 people, for
next to nothing.
Then when the issue of that egomaniac Putin threatening
our nation and others with nukes, they actually applaud
and seethe with anger toward the buffoon Biden, as if that

Why would any nation on Russia’s border wish to join

As to Russia if they were to decide to end this war and act like a civilized nation then they’d not have to worry about NATO. At one time they were actually on path to joining NATO but that all ended with Pootin.

Putin was the reason for Ukraine to join NATO and then he became the reason for Finland and Sweden to join NATO.
Had he done nothing then there’d be nothing happening right now. Ukraine would have joined the EU and NATO, there’d still be no reason for NATO warships in the Black Sea (see the Montreaux Convention that prohibits this), and Russia would be raking in BILLIONS every month with oil and gas exports.
But no. Because Pootin has to build an empire for himself.
