Senate Republican says US needs to accept Ukraine will ‘cede some territory’ to Russia
The Hill via Yahoo ^ | December 10th, 2023 | Lauren Sforza

Sen. J.D. Vance (R-Ohio) said Sunday that the United States needs to accept that Ukraine will likely need to “cede some territory” to Russia to end the fighting.

Vance told CNN’s Jake Tapper on “State of the Union” that he is opposed to sending more aid to Ukraine because he does not believe the country will ever be able to overpower Russia. He questioned why sending billions in aid to Ukraine is going to help the country at this point in its war against Russia since previous aid has yet to end the war.

“What’s in America’s best interest is to accept Ukraine is going to have to cede some territory to the Russians and we need to bring this war to a close,” Vance said. “But when I think about the great human tragedy here, hundreds of thousands of Eastern Europeans innocent have been killed in this conflict, the thing that’s in our interest and in theirs is to stop the killing.”

...snip...

“The idea that Ukraine was going to throw Russia back to the 1991 border was preposterous, nobody actually believed it.”

“So what we’re saying to the president and really to the entire world is you need to articulate what the ambition is, what is $61 billion going to accomplish that $100 billion hasn’t,” he added.

In some of the areas, the population is predominately Russian.

One could make the case we need to cede parts of California to Mexico.

It would be best if Russia gave up some of the conquered lands and if other parts were demilitarized, but this is going to end at some point, and it won't end in total victory or even in a return to the status quo.

True, but what's gonna prevent Russia from trying this again in the future? The bear already promised not to invade if Ukraine gave up their Soviet nukes, and we see how that eventually turned out.

And if NATO countries are smart, they won't try to add Ukraine (not because of Russia's bitching, but because of what does Ukraine really bring to the table for it?).

We have the power to keep what we have.

You're a sociopathic fool if think Ukrainian should keep dying in futile proxy war it can't win. The Ukrainians absolutely no leverage in any negotiations.

And the Poles should have just given up in Warsaw. Washington shouldn't have crossed that river. Should Vienna have just given up two months earlier? Just because you "can't" win, you would rather live under an oppressive tyranny (take your chains and slavery!)?

And did that treaty allow the USA to foster a coup that in 2014 toppled the democratically-elected government of Ukraine?

We may have the power, but we are not protecting our border. Would we be better off now if parts of CA were Mexico?

This isn't about the land...it's about ethnic cleansing. The Ukie leaders have spent the last 20 years filling their population with hate for the Russians.

No elections....close Russian churches, no Russian speaking allowed...

It would be foolish to cede all that wealth.

Intrinsic wealth.

Russia needs to accept that it invaded a peaceful neighbor and stop hostilities immediately and pull back all troops into its own territory and give up Putins dream of reassembling the old soviet union.

Reagan made an agreement with Russia not to arm countries on Russia’s border in order for Russia to leave the European countries it was occupying. This worked great until Obama started arming Ukraine in 2014 and literally having the CIA topple another elected government that was semi friendly with Russia. (Imagine Russia arming Mexico not to mention Cuba). Not only that, Russian speaking areas of Ukraine was being bombed by third parties and not protected.
Obama/Biden stirred this pot (manipulated by the CIA?)and the result is tens of thousands of dead Ukrainian and Russian young men and civilians.
Plus, there is no way Russia will ever give up their only southern port.
Frankly, we should have been bringing Russia into the world economy and let them be to financially invested in peace to be doing something stupid..

True, but what's gonna prevent Russia from trying this again in the future?

I can't say anything will for certain, but the fact that they didn't succeed this time will have a discouraging effect. Also, time will give Ukraine a chance to rebuilt its economy and its defenses.

There's also the question of whether Russia really wants to try to digest unruly and anti-Russian Western Ukraine. When they decided they wanted part of Eastern Ukraine Russian leaders may have been captivated by the idea of conquering the whole country, but by now they many have recognized that it's a pipe dream.

Neither Putin, nor the current American regime will last forever, so there will be an opportunity to get beyond the current mess. Russia, the US, and Europe may come to realize that Ukraine is a useful bridge between East and West, one that doesn't have to be and shouldn't be wholly Eastern or wholly Western.

You are spewing Kremlin talking points. Russia made and ratified a treaty, and they should keep it, just like the rest of the world.

“From the Uke friendly, no territorial loss, Zelensky negotiated and Uniparty DC quashed March of ‘22 settlement to unconditional surrender.”

Do you have a link to that effect; that in March ‘22 Russia offered Ukraine a deal that Ukraine would NOT LOSE any of its territory? Also, that “the Uniparty” quashed it?

Post that link here.

It was ever thus.

I support troops on the border.

See I’m a real conservative, I’d deport the illegals AND defend Europe from Putin.

“Russia already agreed by treaty to borders with Ukraine, and shouldn’t be allowed to overcome the treaty by aggression. Or they will do it again with the new treaty as soon as they find it convenient.”

The pro-Russia FReepers will insist, “But this time it will be different!”

“What treaty?”

The Russian-Ukrainian Friendship Treaty of 1997.

Common knowledge. Go ahead and ride that ship completely under the waves. We are very quickly coming upon total Uke collapse and Team Uke Corruption is still in total denial. The full disclosure of the ineptitude of the Globohomo/Uniparty alliance that you neocons have hitched your credibility to is about to come cascading out. The brutally screwed (by DC) Ukes will soon be singing loud enough that even you might actually hear.
