The video is too long,you have to watch 15 minutes before the guy answers the question. Basically the author claims Russia thinks it needs the city to project unity within the Donbass. Russia thinks having this city in Ukrainian control just a few miles from the territory they hold now will become a future lightening rod for pro/Ukrainians.
I suppose the silver lining could be that Putin may have defined some armistice lines in advance of a potential settlement. Obviously he expects to keep this territory in Russian control, either Russian or independent but pro-Russian. That could be the basis of peace talks, assuming both sides would sit down. Ukraine is not likely to agree to this, and Russia won’t want to look like they are weak in agreeing to talk. So this conjecture could all be for nought.

Putrid is desperate for a victory on the 711th day of his “3 day war” So he uses his troops as cannon fodder to try to overwhelm the Ukrainian defenders.
Now that US military aid is cut off Putrid will not be satisfied with just conquering Donbass but will conquer all of Ukraine. Then his Killing Fields can begin in earnest against the Ukrainian civilian population.
