The White House is set to approve an $18 billion arms sale to Israel including several dozen F-15 fighter planes.
It would be the biggest arms sale by Washington to Tel Aviv since the start of Israel's war against Hamas on October 7.
The sale has been under consideration since the United States received a formal request in January 2023.
Speeding up the delivery was among the main requests from Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant when he visited Washington last week.
Gallant held talks with U.S. officials including Biden's National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan and Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin.
The F-15s need to be built and would not arrive in Israel for several years.
Israel wants to increase its air power not just to fight Hamas but to deter the threat from Iran and its Lebanese proxy Hezbollah.
The military package includes a large number of F-15 aircraft, aircraft munitions and support services, training, maintenance, and many years of contractor support during the lifecycle of the aircraft, which could be up to two decades.
CNN reported that the agreement may include up to 50 F-15s.

I’m not sure what the financial deal is on these planes. I spent thirty plus years in the military industrial complex. Items that only the US buys are super expensive. That’s because the US doesn’t buy enough of them and on a long enough term that companies can invest in automation. So, stuff only sold here is essentially hand built by top quality craftsmen. When the US stops buying, even briefly, the workers get laid off. The plant may close, and whatever they have that’s being taxed for its original purchase value gets sold off, or given away, or scrapped. That means that if Uncle Sam wants more of whatever, they have to find someone to produce it because the original company is either gone or isn’t in that business anymore. The highly trained employees moved away or opened a vape shop. You won’t get them back.
If Uncle Sam wants production capacity that production capacity must be used all the time...every month of every year until Uncle Sam doesn’t want it anymore. Hence, for whatever deal the government makes, it makes it having in mind that if it doesn’t said item most likely won’t be available. Oh, and the more we sell, the more companies automate, the cheaper the item gets.
Israel borrows the money from us to buy this stuff and then pays us back with interest.

Let Israel do it on its own dime. It's a wealthy nation that provides free health care and college tuition for its citizens. Israel can divert its money from domestic spending to pay for its military needs.
Our step one should be to secure our borders, fight domestic crime, improve our economy.
If we do all that, and can still afford it, how about we do like Israel and provide free health care and college tuition for our citizens.
