Eye injuries after solar eclipse surge following phenomenon
Fox news ^ | 04/11/2024 | Michael Dorgan

Immediately after Monday’s solar eclipse, the number of people searching Google for eye-related injuries jumped while one doctor in New York City says she treated a surge of patients with eye pain.

"I had several patients come in panicking saying ‘I don't want to go blind,’" Dr. Janette Nesheiwat, a New York City-based double board-certified doctor tells Fox News Digital. "I couldn't believe it, people actually looked at the eclipse without protection."

Doctors and eye specialists had been warning the public for days not to look directly at the sun, but apparently, some did not heed the advice.

Only with a welding hood and extra dark glass in it.

It’s fairly early in 2024, but that’s my pick for Most Hilarious Video of the Year.

A lot of these people said they were wearing glasses.

Then perhaps they were the wrong kind of glasses. Ordinary sunglasses will not work, of course. Gas welding glasses won’t work. Arc welding ones will, I’ve heard. But I used my own eyes when watching the 2017 eclipse. I never looked at the partial eclipse, however. Only during totality.

You have to wonder. I heard experts on tv saying that you would glance way from the sun before actual damage was done, because it would hurt and you couldn’t force yourself to look longer. People are idiots.

Some people are just to ignorant to take care of themselves.

Good thing Whoopie wasn’t out there... she’d be blind.

Always amazed me that we have a body that maintains all life yet we cannot behold it with the naked eye.

“Arc welding ones will, I’ve heard.”

Yes they do indeed... :)

Arc welding ones will, I’ve heard.

Yes, I used my arc welding shield. I have an auto-darkening helmet that I use for arc welding, but decided that the hand-held welding shield with thick dark glass is better for observing the eclipse.

Using it for a short duration is fine. What you don't want to do is extended exposure of the eclipse. Ten to fifteen seconds with a shield at a time won't do harm to your eyes. People are crazy to stare at the Sun for an hour with inappropriate glasses, and risk damaging their eyes. I've never had a problem looking at the Sun for a couple seconds unprotected, ever since I was a kid. Long duration is a problem.

There is a particular problem that occurs when looking directly at a partial solar eclipse, that doesn’t occur at any other time. The eyes dilate, because the light level is low. But the portion of the sun that is still visible behind the moon is as bright as any other time, only over a much smaller angular diameter. So it will burn tiny little holes in the retina.

>>Unbelievable

The Talking Heads of Ft Worth/dallas in the Monday morning broadcasts stated that people could look at the totality with out eye protection…totally safe.

Actually, you can also get sun damage to the cornea of the eye also. It is epithelial in nature like your skin and the cornea can get sun burn.

Who hasn’t looked right at the sun, briefly?

I was told you must never stare at Uranus.

Welder Lens should be #12 or darker. I did use a #10 for a fee seconds. No problem.

I was in an area of totality (southern Quebec) on Monday and the skies were completely clear. I forgot my special glasses but was determined to look anyway. During the 2 minutes of totality I looked at the sun three times...each for a second or less.

My vision seems to be OK...but I see my retina specialist next week for my yearly exam. We'll see what,if anything, she has to say.
