Somalia's government said it had suspended and detained several members of an elite, U.S.-trained commando unit for stealing rations donated by the United States, adding that it was taking over responsibility for provisioning the force. The Danab unit has been a key pillar of U.S.-backed efforts to combat the al Qaeda-linked militant group al Shabaab. The United States agreed in February to spend more than $100 million to build up to five military bases for Danab. Somalia's defense ministry said in a statement late on Thursday that it had notified international partners of the theft and would share the outcome of its investigation.

Could be the food wasn’t being distributed to people in need and was going to the supporters of the ruling -party.
Years ago when the USN distributed food aid, they made sure food got to the rural communities outside the capital.
Then, the UN took over, and the UN let the warlords distribute it. This greatly empowered the warlords, who refused to pass it out to anyone without the recipient swearing loyalty or doing favors for the warlord.

The cynic in me thinks that those ‘elite’ commandos were our spearhead to seizing the government in Somalia...and the existing government figured it out and came up with an excuse to lock them up.
