Russia's economy is so driven by the war in Ukraine that it cannot afford to either win or lose, economist says
Business Insider / msn.com ^ | April 21, 2024 | Jennifer Sor

"Military pay, ammunition, tanks, planes, and compensation for dead and wounded soldiers, all contribute to the GDP figures. Put simply, the war against Ukraine is now the main driver of Russia's economic growth" Foucart said...

Other areas of Russia's economy are hurting as the war drags on. Moscow is slammed with a severe labor shortage, thanks to young professionals fleeing the country or being pulled into the conflict. The nation is now short around 5 million workers, according to one estimate, which is causing wages to soar.

Inflation is high at 7.4% — nearly double the 4% target of its central bank. Meanwhile, direct investment in the country has collapsed, falling around $8.7 billion in the first three quarters of 2023, per data from Russia's central bank.

That all puts the Kremlin in a tough position, no matter the outcome of the war in Ukraine. Even if Russia wins, the nation can't afford to rebuild and secure Ukraine, due to the financial costs as well as the impact of remaining isolated from the rest of the global market.

Western nations have shunned trade with Russia since it invaded Ukraine in 2022, which economists have said could severely crimp Russia's long-term economic growth.

"A protracted stalemate might be the only solution for Russia to avoid total economic collapse," Foucart wrote. "The Russian regime has no incentive to end the war and deal with that kind of economic reality. So it cannot afford to win the war, nor can it afford to lose it. Its economy is now entirely geared towards continuing a long and ever deadlier conflict."

Other economists have warned of trouble coming for Russia amid the toll of its war in Ukraine. Russia's economy will see significantly more degradation ahead, one London-based think tank recently warned ...

Putin is a grand fool of historic proportions.

Few people in human history were as set as he was when he became Russia’s leader.

After the fall of the Soviet Union, Russia was poised to enter the world once again, but this time as a good neighbor and friend, and not as a conqueror and promoter of communism, Satan’s religion.

And, for a nice long time, Putin seemed to be fulfilling prophecy and leading Russia to that new place of prominence in the world as a good neighbor and friend and the world was happy to welcome Russia back, too! Good times!!

Ah, but then Putin went back on the bottle, getting drunk on Satan’s Soviet poison once again, just like they did last century!

And, just like last century, in his ego’s drunken stupor, Putin sent his army to kill his neighbors and break their stuff and steal there country.

And so, here we are and it’s deja vu all over again. “SSSDD”: “Same Soviet sh!t, different day”.

And, this time it will end the same way as it did the last time, with the implosion of the Russia.

All that was good is lost now, because Putin’s ego pissed it all away. D’oh!! What a fool!!!

Oops … “there country” should be “their country”.

Before the war, Russia was in long-term population decline.

Then they decided to kill the fertile men on the battle field.

Reality walks up slowly, carrying a big stick.

Just substitute “Putin” for “Zelenski” and it fits just as well.

This is a good example of why FR is dying
FR used to be fun, positive, something to look forward to
Now it’s just rampant bullying and personal insults every day - and you do nothing about it
So good people quietly leave ... with their donations
Look, it’s your site, if you want to turn Free Republic into “Free Russia”, just keep doing nothing
But then make sure you hit up the Russia cheerleaders for your donations (funny, we never see their names on the donor board)
Go ahead, flame me, I don’t care ... I’m on my way out of FR too, it’s not fun anymore

Which just goes to show that whatever measure of economic growth they are using is BS.

You saw the same thing here in the U.S. earlier this year, when the government/media propaganda cartel was celebrating $400+ billion of "GDP growth" in a quarter where the government borrowed an additional $1.2 trillion to finance that activity.

The USSR (Russia) never really recovered from the population losses in WWII. Sure, the population made some feeble gains.

Communist do not breed well. The kill the incentives for family, love, tradition.

Russia has more reason to be running up deficits than the US does.

"You saw the same thing here in the U.S. earlier this year, when the government/media propaganda cartel was celebrating $400+ billion of "GDP growth" in a quarter where the government borrowed an additional $1.2 trillion to finance that activity".

Our insane leadership, working to destroy the country, does not mean everything the country are spending is without reason.

It just means we have a destructive government which needs to be replaced.

I don’t know about you, but to me it seems obvious that spending $1.2 trillion to get $400 billion in economic activity is a losing proposition even if every penny is spent for “a good reason.”

I am not disagreeing with you.

I am saying it is the current leadership, particularly the far-left Biden admin, in concert with the deep state, which is the problem.

No, it’s not the current administration that is the problem. Go back and look at the Federal budgets and borrowing binges going back as long as you’ve been alive.

The magnitude is far greater since Obama.

The desire to destroy the country is out in the open.

The Cloward Piven strategy was expostulated in the 1960's.

Actually, all other sources say the Russian economy is fine. This is another faux piece trying to make it look like sanctions are hurting the Russkies, when they only hurt the Euros.

Not his fault, as his military thought they were competent - just ask Shoigu

Sure, we have been hearing for TWO years that Western sanctions would cripple the Russian economy, leading to color revolution that resulted in Putin being removed from office.

Instead, Russia's economy is growing faster than our economy and almost any other in the West.

Two years, we heard the Russia was running out of ammo and missiles. Instead, Russia is outproducing the entire Western world in producing ammo and missiles.

< We were told Putin was dying of stomach, blood and thyroid cancer or that he was already dead and Russia was using a body double in his place for the past two years. Yet, he is still alive and well and about to be sworn in for seventh term in office.

You and your pitiful sources have been consistently wrong, spewing out propaganda that would be too ridiculous for a Babylon Bee propagand and would make Baghdad Bob blush.

Take your propaganda and shove it up Justin Trudeau' behind>
